Check the slack adjuster first

When I had my mechanic do a valve adjustment he said its self adjusting and it had more room for adjusting but for some reason I don't think he was correct...it does it when I lightly rev the engine up then when it idols back down it clunks 2 or 3 times then stops...i took the belt cover off today for inspection and to see if it makes that ticking noise only when the belt is moving but it still does it when the belt isn't moving

I'd start with the adjuster otherwise you have to pull apart the engine. At least either adjuster can be replaced without pulling the engine. Otherwise you will need an oil change kit and all the gaskets at least for the top half of the engine

Thank you 400 !! I was reading through the service manual and it said use a flathead to turn counterclockwise to tighten...that being said is it not a self adjuster ?
If it does need to be replaced I'm going to do a top end while I have it apart...if i call a parts supplier like country cat would they be able to tell me or know all the parts I need for a top-end replacement and timing chain replacement?

Same adjuster as mine or close to it. Mine was just a spring tensioner if I turned the screw one way it would go back on it own. As for top end parts of you give me some time I could make a list for you if you need. You doing rings too?

Piston with rings will be cheaper way to go. I'll answer the pm when I get off work

Does it say how to check the tensioner? On my 03 500 (Suzuki eng) you unbolt the tensioner and let it come all the way out. Then see how much of a gap there is between the base and the engine. I remember checking mine a while back.

Yes poco it does...i posted a pic from the manual a few comments above but I can't get it to turn either way which leads me to believe something needs to be replaced

Maybe it is just a bad tentioner. That would be quick and easy:) I imagine you would be replacing it anyway, so I would try that first.

Is there any metal in the oil? I would expect a timing chain rattling around to create some metal flake in the oil.

I'll try get that list tonight if not tomorrow for sure

There was the last time I changed it but I just changed it today and there wasn't any...and yes I'm going to change that before I do the top end...but I will be doing the top end in the near future bc it's been smoking since I swamped it

Ok guys the new timing chain tensioner lasted one ride 32 miles ...the spring loaded mechanism actually broke...any ideas where I go from here ? I put the old one back in and adjusted it and its still slapping but not as bad...what do you guys think I should do next ?

bump

anyone know wher i go from here ?

i just talked to a service tech at country cat and every other word out of his mouth was umm umm umm so he was no help at all

something is causing my spring loaded tensioner to fail and not keep tension on the timimg chain.

Did you follow the FSM procedure when you installed it?

Yes sir it was very easy bolt it back on adjust it and put the screw cap back on i even used a new o ring and gasket. ..its a deeper issue than just the tensioner assembly ...it's want to get the parts ordered along with the top end but idk if i need a new timing chain , chain guide, chain tensioner and another tensioner assembly

I ordered all the timing chain parts and the top end kit that is on back order till February. ..can I replace the timing chain without having to take the cylinder off ?

Yes you can, no need to pull the jug, not sure on the 443 but you may be able to change the guides without pulling the head as well.

Thank you Thank you !
I'm a little scared to do the timing chain myself to be honest and I don't want to have to replace the head gasket twice...i have the service manual but the timing chain part is very confusing to me ...my cylinder might need to be sleeved because no one makes an oversized piston for this engine
