I just put my 96 zrt 600 together after sitting for 10 yrs. Everything is new and rebuilt except the clutches. I had the back of the sled on a stand trying it out and making sure everything rotates properly and my primary wasnt engaging until i revved it right up and then it would bang and engage hard. I took it off the stand to take it around the yard quick and the belt was smoking like crazy and it was a dog and wouldnt really go anywhere. It seems like a clutch problem. Is this a symptom of a bad clutch? Anywhere I can get rebuild kits for the primary and secondary?? thanks

If you had the secondary apart and did not wrap the cover to the next closest studs it will do this. Seems like it starts out in 2nd gear. The clutch will not close all the way from lack of spring pressure.

If the primary is slamming it may be the spring or weights or both that you have in it. One other thing is maybe the primary sheave bushing is bad and corroded. You will need to take apart and inspect.

I would leave it in the middle setting. The settings alone even on the extreme left or right won't do what you are describing though.

Do you have a clutch puller to take the primary clutch off with?

You never stated if you twisted the cover to the next set of holes. This will pre load the secondary spring. If not, its like starting out in 2nd or 3rd gear.

yeah preloaded the spring on the secondary before I installed it. I do have a clutch puller, I was trying to find a rebuild kit for my clutch but I cant find anything other than performance trail kits. Any recommendations on a kit? thanks

Call Country Cat or Kens sports. They can set you up with bushings, pins, weight arm bolts for the weight arms, springs, secondary rollers if its a roller and what ever your may need.
First, I'd pull it. Maybe you will find its trashed and need a new uncalibrated clutch. Never know till you take it a part.
