All Balls brand are one i'd stay away from as well,, seen many of them go bad soon after installation in nearly all applications from ATV's to sleds and motorcycles as well
But, to look at Killen Time15's post above, it has me wondering just how he has ever gotten all balls that last long,, Koyo IS a quality brg manufacturer
I have had nothing but bad luck with Koyo bearings. Everytime I have one fail, it is a Koyo. I have used KLM bearings and never had one fail in the bush yet, but that being said after the complete and very expensive (bearing, hub and shaft) failure with the last Koyo I bought, I now change my bearings every spring. I would get 4 Allballs from Royal Distrubuting @ a cost of $102 shipped to Kamloops BC.
I have however found a place (Internationalmotorsports.com) in Delta BC that has the Teryx front wheel bearings part # 92045-0123 (Koyo DAC3055W bearing) which I can get shipped to me for $67 for 4. $57 for the bearing and taxes. $10 to ship them to me.
Needless to say I'm going to buy the Koyo bearings and some beer to help install them. Lol
I have been told that my once a year bearing swap is an overkill but I have never had wheel bearing problems since I started doing it. For $67 and 4 hrs time (could be done faster but that beer will not drink itself) I'm good for the year.
One of my riding buddy's just ground a groove in his stock 06 700 EFI rear rim from a bad Koyo bearing. (The age of the bearing is unknown due the the fact this is a new to him quad). Now he had to take the rim in to get someone to weld the groove, replace the lower shock bolts and worst of all he lost out on some fantastic mud riding. (Kamloops is a very dry area so when we get mud like that it is big treat) His quad is now in my shop to get 4 new wheel bearings.
So that all said my best advise for anyone about wheel bearings would be to find a good cheap place to buy 4 new ones and once a year change them out, a lost weekend wheeling with friends and family is not worth the cost to do it.
How many miles do you put on a year? I put 2 rear bearings in my 03 this year. The fronts are original. I have put at least 1500 miles on this year so far with no troubles. I imagine how much time you spend in the water will make a difference and what kind of dirt you ride in too.
2000 to 2500 kms per year, 60% dry dusty riding, 30% water, mud and 10% snow. Last weekend we did about 60 kms but where out from 9 am to 6 pm. Mud, mud mud. thumbguy
I have had no problems with Koyo bearings. How long they last depends on riding conditions. In my area we have a combination of coal dust and rocks. It does a number on the bearings and bushings. I did get a set of Koyo's to last over 4,000 miles which was downright amazing.
Coal dust is a leftover from the mining days and the silt and shale act like a lapping compound when it gets in the bushings and bearings.
Some pictures of what this stuff does to the machine. I am to the point now I have shims between the bushings and the mounts because of the excessive wear. Even with brand new bushings and such, it is no longer tight without spacers and shims.
