you set them on the wrong stroke. you can be tdc and be on the wrong stroke. my guess is they are loose now and you need to reset them. on a four stroke you can be tdc on two different strokes.

 

I thought I might have done that too... On one stroke, the springs were compressed and on the other stroke, they were depressed with a 1/4 in. gap... I adjusted on the compressed side. Was that wrong?

 

Sounds like you did it on the the stoke. Did you have the timing plug out and have the timing mark line up? Durring the compression stroke all the valves should be closed.

 

I got it. Thanks! I was 180 off. Runs a lot better now but it still is using oil. Plenty of power but using way to much oil for 180 hrs.
