I heard on the news here in Ontario, that the provinces of Quebec and Ontario are ready and can help in the wake of Katrina , but no one has asked them and they have to wait to be asked first before they will/can help.

If there is some kind of law or International agreement about this , then I guess that is the way it is, but if not then , why are we as Canadian's officialy stating , " WE MUST BE ASKED TO HELP BEFORE WE DO"

Sorry guy's but this is a big rant for me , people need help and we can , and we are not.

Sometimes all the Goverment B.S. is just crazy. I feel so bad for all the people down there. We were just on vacation 6 weeks ago down there. Stayed in Long Beach MS. and took a day and went to New Orleans. We really enjoyed it. What a shame for all of those people. I have a old college room mate that lives in Denham Springs La. I am kinda worried about him and his family. I know all of our good friends from the north would be more than willing to lend us a helping hand if you were allowed, but for now I guess just keep all of those folks in your prayers.

I don't know what the deal is with it either Traxterman, but I find it odd how these things always seem to unfold. Seems like some kind of "Country/Nation" Pride, I can recall the Russian Submarine disaster in '95 I believe where just from not asking for help in a timely fashion 110 lives were lost.

I know this Katrina disaster is a lot larger scale, but just another example where we could be helping out right away.

Wierd... I dunno

I agree with you Traxtrman, when it comes to releif for our neighbours, it should be instantaneous. That's a big part of what we stand for, but unfortunatly, our goverment doesn't always portray this, and sometimes plays politics just a little too much.

But don't get me wrong, I am proud to be Canadian!

The problem is liability..and by the Govn'ts involved being "ASKED" is a necessity because of this reason..I know it sounds trivial but if someone gets more severly injured as a result..things could become a bigger problem for the volenteer and/or what happens if the volenteer gets injured or worse..gets killed??
Cause we all know how sue happy people are these days..

Is there not some kind of "Good Samaritan Law " that protects people period !!!I always thought that there was such a law,

Example : buddy is in a car that is on fire and going to explode ( presumably because of the fire ) and Joe Good Samaritan brakes the glass on the door to pull him out, saving his life, and as a result the rescued guy gets his legs all cut up and scared. So he ( the rescued guy) is not able to sue besause the rescuer saved his life !!

There-by the rescuer was/is protected by the "Good Samaritan Law"

Regardless Canada could still offer assistance and wait for acceptance, but we ( as far as I know ) are not even offering !!!

I am not arguing for or siding with our pi$$ poor govn't..I agree we should be there now!! Put the boys in the planes and go now..
I went through a hurricane 2 years ago (not as bad as this one by any means) and man it sucked big time and was pretty scary where I was wide open to the ocean and the full force of the winds and water..no power for 9 days and 2 babies ( 1 & 2-1/2 years old) yes we got our hands on a generator (6th day) but no power means no fuel being pumped for the generator..I pray big time for these folks..God Bless you all

But Keep in mind...Two Different Countries involved here..
We have no choice but to wait..It sucks I know

Yeah, we need to get the ok... reason is I think that our guys helping out there would be paid by the us government. It's a cost for services rendered. Much like the US would do to us if they came to give us a hand. There is most likely an aggrement already made that forces our government to stand by until they are requested by the american government.

Perhaps US is just trying to get a handle on things first, what with the looting and gunfire going on... i'm sure we can help out in the manner of producing fresh water for the people out there (we've got that military group that turns salt water to fresh water) and search and rescue efforts. As it stands now, they probably don't know where to put us yet...

What makes me mad is that the residents or refugee's as they are now called are looting and stealing from their own city. Gun shops are being stripped and the Police are now simply trying to keep people from killing themselves let alone looting stores.

You'd think the people that are hit the hardest would come together as a community and help eachother out, instead they are more interested in stealing guns, ammo, and tv's.

It's a sad day when people think more about material possessions than helping a friend or family. I sent my money to the Canadian Red Cross and even though only 20% of my money gets to the relief effort it's something. (20% because that's all relief organizations actually contribute after payroll(yes they have people on payroll) and government taxes(Yes the government dips their hands everywhere) which is so stupid it makes you not want to contribute, but at least something gets to them.

Just make sure you contribute to the right organization, not the ones that crop up overnight.

We do have water making units that make fresh water from salt, but you couldn't use them there, there's way too many contaminants in the water, all it would do is foul the membranes up. I guess you could stay off shore and ship it in. I'm sure they have these things running, but there's no distribution. The guys looting people's houses and stores need a good kick in the head. I can see getting some food for your family, but you aren't going to eat a TV, friggen low lifes.

One big minority if all the gun shops are looted, electronic shops, dealerships, etc etc..............although they did mention that many drug stores are in tact except for condoms and prescription drugs........police are letting people loot in hopes that they remain calm enough nott o hurt anyone.

Actually yesterday we were "asked" (at least the urban search and rescue team from Vancouver was) by the Governer Lady to help. ( I believe it is some sort of protocol that has been agreed upon between the 2 countries. I know the resuce team was reading and willing to go with what happened on 9 11 but were not asked)
The politics things need to be put aside when it comes to helping in life and death situations. I know it requires a major amount of co ordination.
There is no way that we could just sit by and not help our neighbours to the south. Just the same way if something happened here they would be here helping. No question about it.

what is happening there makes me sick ,im ashamed, if they new it was going to be this bad why didnt they do something, transportation for those that couldnt afford to leave before it hit . we are supposed to bail all the other countries but cant take care of our own crap , why they or someone dosent ask FOR HELP is pretty easy PRIDE . HOW MANY DEAD NOW AND THE ONES LEFT ARE MAKING IT WORSE ON THEM SELVES i wish them all the best of luck .i gave as much as i could to the red cross to help i wish our goverment would step up . im glad we have friends across the boarder to the north .

You guys sure don't have to hang your head low as it's out of your control/reach. We all know how the majority of people feel in any disaster. I have been embarassed too many times to count, but I'm still proud of my country and I'm sure you guys are too, as you should be. Of course most of the time all we hear is the bad stuff, it spreads like wildfire. But if you think back not so far or dig a little deeper, the Canadian government has done some good things and will keep doing them. Basically, we know where your heart is. Thanks!!

Well Ralph, in response to your statement beng Canadian right now sucks, i am sure when you sit back, take stock, you will agree that being a canadian is still pretty good, I agree, we have an unreponsive government that is to passive to the worlds needs, IE Tsnuami, and New Orleans, and I to am very dissapointed at our so called immediate reaction force, as i have stated before i proudly put on a Canadian Forces uniform every day and find it hard to accept the fact it takes us so long to do anything, i am also an Engineer and part of my job responsibility is to maintain our "state of the art water purrification units and water bagger", what I am bothered by is not the fact we haven't sent 5000 troops there at a moments notice , I am pissed that are equipment is sitting in Trenton waiting, for god sakes, call the american air national guard and get them to send a couple starlifters up, fly these machines down to the orleans airport and start making water, let the american troops provide security and distribution, just get our guys and gear there to help these poor people, my appolagies, I am getting long winded now, so to sum it up Ralph I am still prout to be Canadian, how would you like to have G. Bush not callin the shots(sitting there waiting as per normal), he spent 8 billion in Iraq but called on his father and Billy Clinton to fund raise to help the people of New Orleans, that is what disgusts me, what did it take him, 5 days to visit New Orleans, probably to busy braggin about his ranch in near by texas, and wallowing in all the cash he is making on the elevated fuel costs, personally and governmentally
