Question about clutch shims

My buddy has a 04 F6, and in the begining of the season it made a squealing noise from the clutch. He solved the problem by using different belt, instead of the belt that came with the sled. It worked all the way through the season with no problems. Last tuesday while at the Cat Show in Batavia, he was talking to our dealer about the noise that came from the clutch. The dealer told him that he could eliminate the noise by taking out a shim in the clutch. It was a problem for a few 04 F-cats built last year, and that it wouldn't take much to fix it.

OK, after all that, heres the question. If the dealer takes out a shim, does the sled lose top or middle range on speed? My buddy doesn't want to lose speed, even if it means he runs a weaker belt that is less stiff, but more prone to breaking.

No, removing the shim won't cause any performance problems as long as it is shimmed correctly. The 031 needs to be a little tighter than the normal belts. If you take out too many it will squeal again, only in a different way. His dealer should know how to do it if he can't.
