Belt Squeeling

I changed my belt on Friday before a big ride on Saturday. It is a 2002 ZL600EFI. It is the same belt as the one that was on it. The sled now creeps forward as if I am giving it gas and wants to go on its own and if you hold the break down the belt starts squelling pretty loud. The old belt did not do this and they are the same belts. Is this something that happens because the belt is new and needs to be broken in? The old belt was the original belt that came from the factory and the new one was a spare OEM.

Just curious if anyone has ever experienced this.

Thanks.

nothing has been done to it. it is 100% stock and the belt I pulled off was the original belt that came on it. I put the exact same belt back on but new. i bought the sled from an older gentleman who bought it brand new. the sled still looks like it should be on the show room floor.

Measure the width of the old belt compared to the new belt. I'll bet the new one is a touch wider. Probably just because of manufacturing tolerance of the belt. With the sled shut off, see if you can insert a feller gauge between the side of the belt and the primary pulley. Should have about 0.040" clearance. If you have clearance and it is still squealing, you could have a broken primary spring and the clutch is trying to engage at a way too low rpm. Or, if the belt is too short, it could be squealing on the underside of the belt and not on the sides. I'd bet on belt too wide though.
