I would like to hear from all you who have owned or ridden a 2000 ZR700. I have seen several for sale in the last few years and am wondering how it worked and held up.

Specifically;

The engine.
Is it still as shakey as the old 95-96 Wildcat?
How is the piston life, cracks, broken skirts etc?
Throttle response with the TM carbs.
Overall reliability.
How is the clutch life with the 9 tower? Does the clutch get all loose and rattly after 1500 miles? Do the arm bushings survive a full year?

Is the suspension AWS V and is the stance 43"?

I am pondering buying one as a rebuild project for my son to ride and don't want to buy a pig in a poke. I like the torque of my old Wildcat and hope the reliability is there.

My brother bought one new, He still rides it. After 6500 miles the clutch needed replacement. He put new rings in it at the 5000 mile mark and pistons were still very good. Added Carbon tech reeds while the heads were off. Added a clutch kit, studs and thats it. It runs great. He's going to put a ripsaw track on it this year so that tells me he's not ready to get rid of it yet.
43 ski stance/ handles great, like most ZR's. And yes it vibrates at idle, all the 700's of those years did, but it goes away as soon as you crack the throttle. gas milege about 10 //rejetted down to 310 or 320 mains
7800 miles and still going strong. Only issue was it used to get air in the gas lines and quit running- replaced every gas line on it and that cured that.
Buying any used sled, you have to do your homework/ compression test/ looseness in the steering/ track condition etc....hope it works out for you. Its a fun sled to ride and it very reliable. good luck

I had one that I bought in 2000 with a 157 miles on it.
I will tell you that the engine is a 1988 design and they had a lot of troubles with it
in the late 80's. After they worked the bugs out of it and turned it into a 700, it is a great engine.

It is not the fastest 700 and is only about 10 more hp than the case reed twin 600.

It was a "turd" and a gas hog when I first rode it. It only got 7.5 miles per gallon.
You will need to down jet it one size from stock, drop the needle one clip and reclutch it. I got it up to 12.5 mpg's

I sold my 2000 ZR700 last year with 3500 miles on it, I called it "the Maytag"
it ran when nothing else did.
When I sold it the plugs were 3 years old.

Buy it, they are great sleds

I have a 99 zr 700 and i really like it. It pulls really hard all the way through the powerband.

It takes a little tweaking to get it right but once its right its a great sled. I wont be selling mine for a long time.

Had a 94 zr 700, the thing was a rocket ship loved the motor and all that torque. Couldn't keep the thing running though. Piston after piston. Went to a 99 ZR 700 cuz I loved the power from that motor so much. Suspension on the trail is awesome. Great sled as far as I am concerned. Needs to be tuned a bit from the factory settings though.

CHEERS.

Question. Im not trying to be a smart ass but to the guys blowing piston skirts, wher you measuring the piston to cylender clearance before slapping in a new piston. And what was the clearance.[/b]
Ichecked the clearance and if I remember correctly it was .0035". within spec. anyway. The problem I had was the crank = 1 piston, oil injection cable = 2 more pistons, jetting the first time= 2 more pistons. The sled was really tinkered with and beat hard when I got it. When I finally got it working well man did it fly.
Later.

Thanks for the reponses. Looks like it's pretty positive. I've had guys tell me they traded their 700 for a 600 APV and it was never as good as the Krugger motor.
