Hey Guys and Gals,

I will be the first to admit that for some reason, I am totally infatuated with the El Tigre's Cat used to build  . With that; over the years I have owned a 1985 el Tigre' 6000, 1986 el Tigre' 6000, a 1987 el tigre' 5000, and a 1990 el Tigre' EXT....... OK so maybe I need some help. Admittedly this is one thing that perhaps makes me a full blown dork? I admit I like the old things for some reason that truthfully I can't explain beyond that fact that for their day they looked mean and were fast.

I have seen them all save one. The 1989 El Tigre' 6000. I guess I am wondering if they are rare, or if they were even built? This was supposedly the last 6000 series. I have seen the parts on-line for it, there are parts everywhere that cliam it existed, yet in 20 years I have never seen one. I have even seen 84's, but never the 89' 6000. bang your head

So for fun, I thought I'd put something out there to see if anyone knows if they were ever built or if someone has any pic's? What better place to ask then here?

Thanks all,
7UP

the 3 best "vintage" sites I have found for looking for parts are

1) New Hampshire vintage site
2) Vintage Sleds/ VSCA
3) Irondog's site

post an add for what you need and you will get responses back within hours if not minutes most likely. Good Luck.

otherwise, you can still get some of the parts from Arctic and/or after market companies like Dennis Kirk, Shadetree, etc.

what all are you looking for?

I've never seen one.  In 1989 the 530 single exhaust was the only EXT that I remember, replacing the twin exhaust 530 of 1988 and 1987.  Also, wasn't that the year (1989) that they got rid of the tunnel mounted shocks and changed the cowl? :beer_cheers:

I would post the pic's 896000 sent me, BUT..... They are of his sled and I am not sure he'd be cool with me doing it. Believe me the 1989 6000 does exist. It was in the older "External Shock" chassis like the 85-88's were, but it looks like it has the buckhorn handlebars on it too. The decals look awesome too (but this is coming from a guy who has a thing for those sleds......) :D

They also made the 89 El Tigre' EXT which also had the sigle exhaust and the "Internal Shock" chassis like the pic JeffMSU just posted. Those things are a dime a dozen though. They sold like hotcakes in the updated form which is why the 6000's were more rare.

Not sure on how much different the sleds were, but I remember drooling over an 87 sales book for years  . Here is what I remember:
2 cylinder, 529cc Liquid cooled twin with twin tuned exhaust. 2 VM 36mm Mikuni carbs (but I suspect they added 38mm on production) I once read they made about 90HP, but this was not am offical cat claim. Oil Injection (They only 6000's to have it). AFS front suspention with 7" travel, and "Arctic Long Travel Slide Rail" rear suspention with 7.5" of travel. 16" x 121" track with .75 lugs...... Reverse was not an option on the 6000's.

Hey all-
I remembered that I posted this topic about a year ago. In an ironic twist; this weekend, I sealed the deal on an "88" El tigre' 6000 on ebay. I have yet to pick it up. I'll be doing that in a few weeks. But the sled sure does not seem to be an 88.......

In fact, I bid because I was convinced it was an 89' 6000 :super_happy:

However, the serial number starts with an 88..... I dunno Apparently the sled was manufactured in 9/87. I imagine that if this is an 88 (which is very convincing due to the serial number, manufacture date, and the temp guage mounted like the 88's and older tigre's had); the converson to make it look like an 89' would have been possible, but must have been expensive. It has everything the 89's had with the exception of the instrument cluster.....

Either way, I am happy. It needs a lot of work, and I am crazy enough to do it all for this thing. But I have my questions.
  1. I have heard rumors that if there is still inventory at the plant in TRF, Arctic may take some of the last year models back and update them to look like the current model year. Is this true? If so is there a way to know if this is what happend?
  2. What if the tunnel was replaced at some point with an 88's? Does the state of MN require the change in Vin to be documented? Is there a way to know the tunnel was replaced on the sled?
Again, I just wanted to see if anyone can anwser these questions.

Thanks all!

Glad to see that you landed the El Tigre, I saw it on ebay as well. I think you got a good buy on it. 1989 El Tigre 6000's do exist, I have a really poor one in our used parts lot. I saw a new one back in the day as well. There are a lot of small differences from a 1988 to a 1989 6000, maybe you are aware of them as well...decals, warning lights in the gauges, handlebars, rear idler wheels, etc. If the 6000 that you bought has everything that points to its being a 1989 but still carries an 88 serial number, then 1 of a few things are likely. As you stated, mabey an 88 chassis was put under it after a collision, etc. Or, maybe the sled has just been updated at some point with some 89 items by one of its owners. Another possibility is that it may have been a show model/test model/etc for Arctic. Prior to 1994, it was common to come across this last circumstance as they would use the prior years model as a starting point in developing the next seasons graphics, etc. As far as I know, sleds like that were no longer let out of TRF since the 94 model year. Keep us updated on your Tigre project. Tom Rowland.

I was watching that sled as well, was gone fishing over the weekend and missed the end of the auction. If you are looking for any parts, I would probably give the guy from the previous post a try, Tom Rowland of http://www.thomassnosports.com/. He has helped me out on a few sleds and if he doesnt have it, can probably find it for you! Tom, I just wish I would have bid higher on your NOS 250 seat! >:-(

Thanks jeffmsu- I think Tom and the rest of the guys from Thomas Sno Sports have been very helpful thus far...... And they have a really, REALLY cool collection of Cats. The 82' Tigre Proto is of particulair interest to me. I keep trying to convince my Wife to let me take a "detour" whenever we go up north cause I want to check the place out. But I have yet to convince her...... So this year if I can just get her hooked on sleds; maybe I'll have he chance to win the "detour" debate. :D

In fact you all are AWESOME! :chug:

Just so happens I have the 89 Cat brochure at home. Bought it on e-bay since I had an 89 Eltigre EXT and wanted the brochure to go with it. I will scan in the 89-6000 pages an post them soon.[/b]
jkd37- You are ALSO AWESOME! Not worthy:

Sorry to report, but there is no 89 6000 listed in the brochure, just the Eltigre EXT 530. Was it a left over build from the 88 lineup?

That surprises me..... Perhaps you are right? Perhaps the 89's were infact an upgrade kit for 88's? Perhaps the dealers did it to spruse up their inventories of unsold 88 ET6's and there was not an actual build at TRF for 89's due to carry over on a model that had little consumer demand?

I have seen TON's of 88' Tigre 6000's. Ton's of 87's, 86's, 85's, and even a few 84's. Someone somewhere has got to know.

Thanks jkd37!

There definately was 1989 El Tigre 6000s produced, as stated earlier, I have one. The 1989 6000s were announced later than the rest of the line and did not make the brochure. A little background...the 1986-1988 6000s had been fairly successful but Arctic saw a need to make a change. They developed the 1989 El Tigre EXT (not called a 6000) with many changes from the old 6000. They removed the radiator for simplicity and less weight, this allowed them to streamline the hood. They changed the cylinder porting and went to a single pipe for great acceleration, great mid range and less weight. Top end was close to the old 6000. They installed the new-for-89 rear skid frame without outboard rear shocks; that allowed better ride, less weight, more durable and better deep snow capability. They also used the new-for-1989 seat/tank/console combination for a better seating position, more fuel capacity and better sight of the gauges. The El Tigre 6000 was not to be offered for the 1989 model year until dealers and consumers cried all though the spring selling season that the 6000 was absent. Arctic then made a few tweaks to the 6000 and added it to their model line up for 1989. When winter arrived and snow fell, most buyers immediately saw that the new EXT was a much better package than the old 6000 series that everyone thought they were going to miss so much. This similar thing still goes on today when a new model line up is introduced (from any manufacturer), we are slow to give up the old and embrace the new. Great thread guys, I have enjoyed following it.
