96 Z440 fan cooled motor, willl the sled overheat if I use a hood without the cowl pieces on the inside that funnel the air over the heads?

I don't know the answer for fact but I would think they put them there for a reason. I think the intent is to keep most of the engine heat from blowing over the already hot cylinders and instead directing cold air from outside the hood into the cylinders.

On the other hand I don't think they started air ducts on the 440 fans until the mid 90's, I could be wrong......

i wouldnt see the problem in running a different hood since the vents in the front of the hood are pretty big and go directly to the motor, i think it gets alot of cold air directly threw there so i'd at least try the hood out. about when they started the vents, my 1990 jag has them, but it doesnt go as close to the shroud as my Z does i'd think that you would be fine if you ran a different hood, if i got a chance to get a different hood i would since mine has a crack betwen the gauges and the paint is faiding

No it will not hurt it I have that off my daughters 2001 Z440 (well it was missing when I bought it) and I have since even installed screens in the vents to keep some of the crap out.
