Winch Respooling

Hi, I pulled my winch line off in order to replace it. Now I have two ?'s. This is a warn 2500# winch with the steel cable.
First, when I pulled the line out it was just wrapped around the drum and just slipped through the hole in the drum. Shouldn't this be attached somehow to keep me from spooling out to far and unattaching the cable from the winch? I know I should always have 7 or 8 wraps on it, but sometimes I am not standing right there to watch how close I am to the end.

Second, what is the best way to respool the new line (also steel cable)?

Where the cable goes through the drum there should of been a small metal key to lock the cable in(just alittle half-moon shaped peice). Mabey when you pulled it out you did not see it. As far as putting the new on it, I just guide it on with my hand.....seems to work for me.

When i replaced my cable i left those out. If you will feed the cable thru the opening and bend the end back into the hole-- then pull the main piece tight it will work just like the "key" is in the drum. This way also helps if you need to replace you cable on the trails--no tools needed.
