Roughly how long will it take to do a valve adjustment? What else should I do while the machine is apart?

Purty good, I got a bs in mechanical engineering, and keep all of the farm machinery running. I haven't rebuilt an engine yet, and I hate tracking down electrical problems. I don't have much fear when it comes to tearing into things.

I was just wondering how much time to plan on, I hate to leave things torn apart.

I can only offer you my own expereince...I have a 400 manual and with a set of $7 feeler gauges from NAPA and about 2hrs of my time (including removing the plastic), I had my valve lash correctly adjusted.

For what it is worth, my dealer charges 1hr labour for the job. Obviously, I am slower than his mechanic.

It will probably take longer to remove the plastic to be able to work on the valves then it would take to set the valves. No more then a few beer thumbguy

Take a look at the pinned topic and it will show a step by step procedure with pictures.
