Tune-up

I have a 2006 650 V-2 I have done most of the smaller service stuff but am not real good at the technical stuff. I am having a real hard time starting the machine when its cold. If i pull start it it fires up pretty quick. If i try and use the electric start it wont. Once the machine is running and runs for awhile, the electric start works fine. Any suggestions. Im thinking new plugs and new battery? bang your head

Thanks so much guys, I am new to all this but i gotta say its really cool to have these kinds of resources all over the US. I think im gonna take her in for a good all service tune up and go from there. Someday i will have enough confidence to tackle some of these projects. Thanks again,

I had that exact problem with my 400 this past winter. The starter would turn but the machine didn't start. One tug on the recoil and away she went. I'm 99% sure that it was just too bloody cold. But it did start in -50 celsius (the coldest winter I can remember) using the recoil.

0w40 motor oil and the highest output battery you can fit into your battery compartment will help in colder weather.

My DVX had problems starting and I found a loose battery cable. I tightened the cable and it starts fine now. Something to check I guess...

Took my quad in today to the local shop for the tune up. I did put a new battery in yesterday just to make sure and it still didnt start cold. Anyway they charged me for 3 hours of labor and said they adjusted the valves. Just wondering if this is a job i can do myself next time. Any special tools required for this. It seems like i could maybe do this myself next time and save a little cash.

3 HOURS?!?! You got robbed man. Absolutely robbed. My local Gander will charge me $90 to do the valves on the V2 I had. I had never done mine before, and it took me all of an hour. Granted, it's a single cylinder machine, however, I was going nice and slow as I didn't know what I was doing. An experienced tech should only take 1-1.5 hours for a twin.

All you need is a set of feeler gauges ($5-10) and a 10mm wrench. That's it.

My 2 cents is that it is just the nature of the beast. All of my buddies that have the v2 say that it is a b**ch to start and keep idling in cold weather,I live in Canada so no stranger to cold weather, until it is warmed up, after that no problems. If this is your situation you can get a cold weather kit from your cat dealer for about $40.00. (inline heater for your coolant)
