Any of you guys heard of shimming the primary clutch out a bit to stop the belt squeal when running very tight belt deflection? I know you can add or subtract shims in the secondary for belt deflection, but If I switch from the 031 belt to the Ultimax 3 belt, the belt squeals at idle even though the belt deflection is good (1"). If I add a 0.060" shim, the belt deflection is to much, but the squealing stops....

Try adding an .030 shim.

you need to maintain about .020-.030" clearance between the belt and primary sheaves then adjust your belt deflection on the secondary, 1" deflection sounds too tight usually deflection is around 1,1/4 to 1,1/2".

I know the deflection issue is beaten to death. Whats the proper way when pushing down with a ruler? Pushing till you can't push no more, or push down till you see the bottom part of the belt rise up?
