my bike was running real rich so I got a box of spark plugs and now it is spring want to jet for the season. the problem is that I cant even get the idle to set correctly without blackening the plugs it is also blowing quite a bit of black smoke and strong fuel odor. I turned the PMS screw out three turns and started it no throttle and then checked the plug instantly black. did the same turning the PMS screw 1/2 turn each time all the way to closed. all plugs instantly black. I knew before I checked each time because of the smoke coming out from the exhaust. So this leads me to believe I need a smaller pilot jet. correct??? The dyno jet kit did not come with pilot jets. Is it common for someone to add 2inch snorkels and a high flow (supertrapp mudslinger) exhaust and then need a smaller pilot jet. sounds odd to me since you are adding extra air flow you shouldn't need a smaller jet should you? Each time I started it I didn't use any throttle so I dont think I am into the band where the needle height makes a difference yet. it is on the third ring anyways. if the idle is high would it be using the needle at idle? So basically to me it seems like the pilot is out I just want to know if a smaller one seems right or is there something else I should be changing checking first.

When you add an exhaust and snorks, you typically go up a size or two in pilot jets. I would look at the air filter to ensure A) it's clean and B) it's not over oiled. Both will cause you to run rich. I might suggest cleaning it with warm soap water (or gas), drying it, then reoiling it for good measure. ALso check the ductwork for obstructions....be it birds nests, mice nests, dog food, etc... Not kidding about that by the way...I've seen and heard it all and it most definitely happens.

thats what i would have thought a bigger jet. I will clean the filter. but it is stored in a attached garage in the city I know there are no critters but will check that too. lol

so I took the air filter right out and checked that there is no obstructions 2 inch snorks. warmed the engine up and the satrted checking idle plugs from 3 turns out on the pms and down till 1/2 turn. this is the last one at 1/2 turn while idleling for 30 secs (no throttle just start button) and they are still fouled. What am I missing, doing wrong. HELP. Brand new plug.

Your pilot jet is too big. If you turned it in to 1/2 turn and still idled with out stumbling that is a sign your pilot is too big and too much gas. from your pics I would say 2 sizes.[/b]
does it make sense to add exhaust and snorkels and then go down 2 sizes in your pilot jet. i mean thats what it seems like I cant do anything to make it idle lean. it just sounds odd.

Can someone tell what size my pilot jet is and what sizes I should try?

dyno jet kit didn't come witha pilot jet it is slill stock. I dont know what size carb it is

Thats right they dont come with the pilots my bad. What clip do you have it on. Dyno says clip 3 for below 5000. And I just wonder if you don't maybe have a slight vac leak with the diafram in the carb. With all at that air and at idle you should be lean. Maybe your float is sticking.. Just a couple of thoughts

should need bigger pilot, i think somethings plugged up inside the carb or slide leak, as stated above. clean your carb and check slide seal. check filter like sanny said wring out excess, also to adjust pms turn idle up a little, with pod on tach adjust for highest idle speed, if less than 1 turn smaller pilot is needed, if more than 2 turns larger pilot is needed.

it is on the third clip but I was starting it without any throttle so the vacuum shouldnt even come into play I think. maybe I am wrong. it should be real lean but nothing I can do will make it that way. I will try smaller pilot jets. that seems the only way to lean it down at idle.

start it with no boot on the carb that'll lean it out, watch for slide to move or gas to come running out

I guess I should clean it out real good first before I change pilot maybe it got dirty. although it is rich I have real good power no backfire and seems to run strong but it blows smoke and smells like gas then the plug eventually fouls to the point it wont start.

will taking off the airbox lid do the same or do I need to look into the carb?

i would look in if somethings plugged up you'll probably see gas coming out, if slide seal is good you'll see it raise when you hit the gas, also slide spring can hold slide up if clipped part of spring isn't up

Did you have the choke removed from the carb during your jetting? Maybe thats the issue.

do you mean I should remove the choke to jet. I warmed the bike up real good to hope the choke would not be in play. thanks for alll the help everyone I am taking the carb off to clean and inspect it now.

Exactly the same thing happened to my 650. I spent a week trying to figure out why. This is going to sound wierd but all I did was start using seafoam. And it ran like a top. Still today if I dont use seafoam it starts acting wierd, espesaly if its cold. Not sure if it would help you, Maybe just try it if your not already.

Started it without the intake boot on nothing was coming out the slide was working almost in exact unison to the throttle up and down. saw a tiny bit of gas sputter at higher throttle but seemed fine.

When you say started it using seafoam do you mean by adding to the tank or spraying into the carb.

If the choke is broken could it be flooding too much gas into the carb. is there a way to test it. When I was taking the carb off there was no cover on it I dunno and there was the tiniest bit of the plastic center broke maybe a mm of it. It looks like it would only hold the spring in place and it still does that.

should I try the carb with this removed. will it work? Should I replace it. It is the most expensive piece on the carb bang your head

don't know much about choke yet, but if it is sticking thats your problem.
