I need help Is my Zr 440 using too much oil?

I just got a 97 zr 440. I am going thru about 1/3 gallon of oil per tank of gas, the entire top portion of the oil res. The guy I bought it from said he had new pistons put in so maybe they turned up the ratio? I don't even know if you can adjust oil ratio or if this is normal usage? seems like an awful lot to me, double use of my zr 600. Thanks for the help

If I'm doing my math right, at 32:1 you'd be using 1 quart every 8 gallons, and at 40:1 you'd be using 1 quart for every 10 gallons. A lot of guys run their sleds at 50:1. If you're going through 1/3 of a gallon in 10 gallons, that's about 30:1.

Not positive about your model, but on mine you can follow the cable all the way down to the oil pump in the crankcase. There should be two marks down there. At wide-open throttle, the lines should match up, which would be 32:1 from the factory. This is how you can tell if they richened it up, and how you can lean it out if you want.

Sad (but kinda good) news is that when these oil pumps fail, they fail wide open...how many miles on the sled?

Hope this all makes sense...sorry if I wrote it confusingly.
