hi all,

with the season done, lining up my summer projects. I think my hyfax are ready to be replaced..I'll have to measure to double check (do they wear most nearest the engine side on the curve?).

But didn't know if anyone had tips or suggestions or "don't do what I did" stories...
I have a 95 Wildcat if that matters.

One other question - to replace the rear shock on th skid, does the skid need removed? My shock has a nice ding in it from the front shock mount being positioned incorrectly. Not sure if the ding is impeding shock performance.

would a slide/pull hammer work for pulling the hyfax off the rear of the skid thru a track window?

harborfreight has one for like $10....

Anytime I've removed my shocks I've removed the skid as well, never really tried with the skid in the sled so it may be possible to do.
Replacing the slides is fairly simple, when removing once they are tapped back enough that you can grab onto them one quick jerk and they will normally come all the way off. When cutting new ones to length cut them on a 45 degree angle so the track slides around them easier and some WD-40 on the slides will help installing them.

I've swapped out the rear shock on my skid while it was still in the sled, just remove the rear bolts and let it hand by the front ones, but it was a bear getting everything back in, personally with summer here I would remove the hole skid to switch shocks, plus you can do your slides and grease it and check it over real well while its out(wheels,welds,etc.)

When was the last time you took the skid out and inspected it? I'd say, remove the skid. It is fairly easy, and will allow you to do your work effortlessly. While it is out, you could replace all of the 3/8" fasteners with quality grade 8 bolts from Home Depot. Also, check out all of your idler (bogey) wheels, repair/replace where necessary. Also check out all of the bushings and repair/replace where needed. Remove/replace the bolts on the side rail and look for "oval" bolt holes - if found, remove the slide rails and have them welded (or replace them). While the skid is out, you may want to replace your springs as they tend to "soften" over time and they are fairly inexpensive.

On the Hyfax; I replace them each season, but remove the skid to do this, it is just so much easier to remove/replace. Also replace the skid frame rail caps as well. Make sure to pick up new mounting screws for the front of the Hyfax as they are typically worn beyond serviceability limits.

I've never had the skid out personally but I think the dealer did when he replaced my bearings earlier this year. Replaced a few parts...

I was thinking about the springs also....

Don't be lazy!!!!!!

you have 8months

pull the skid OUT of the sled

and replace the sliders

inspected all pivot points

check cross shafts

replace bearings

replace shock or rebuild if needed

and paint the arms and scissor

A good way to check you slides. Use a 10mm open end wrench. Put it on the side of the slide if it dosnt go on the top and bottom together its still good. If you change them also wipe down the metal rail before installing the slide and like gofastcat said wd-40

I'll second Freez's opinion.
Easy to change the sliders with the skid out. Easier to re-re the shocks plus you'll find all kinds of other parts that need attention. Especially idler bearings.
Pull it out. Pull it apart. Repair-replace damaged/worn parts. Clean her up pretty for next season.
