Acrtic Cat 400, Short drive this AM all okay in 2WD. Wife went to mail box, wanted to back up, gears made grinding noise, wouldn't engage, put it in 4WD and ran okay. It will neither engage in fwd or reverse with switch in 2WD, just clashing of gears noise. Will operate in 4WD.

Anyone else had this problem ? Know a fix other than taking to a shop ? anything in particular to look for ?

Thanks

Sounds like either your rear differential is toast or the rear driveline is screwed. Perhaps U-joints.

i would have to say rear differential , driveshaft coupler stripped or a rear axle.

You got it, made 100 on that diagnosis....the splined shaft is boogered up and worn as well as the splined receptacal,,rear drive line...Got to sit down and see who has them, cost and then order and put back together....A relief it wasn't rear differential !!! Oh, that shaft is a bear to get out !!!
