Ok this thread is basically to throw ideas and\or past experiences at this subject (Electronic Power Steering).
I know we all have heard or seen the posts that power steering is not needed. For some it is. Some have medical reasons and others utilize these machines with only one hand for farm or other purposes.
My reason is a torn rotator cuff. I can manage but not for all day rides, which I miss.
Another reason for add ons is cash. If we can add EPS for less than 1500 bucks to a machine that will last another 5+ years, it isnt a bad option compared to buying a brand new atv especially with todays economy.
To start, I have an 05 V2 650 and very happy with it until I rode a 2010 700 S LTD. I shouldnt have done that, I knew better lol. I have researched this upgrade for the last month or so sparingly and came across some useful info if you can say not finding info is useful.
1. The EPS ATV's have different frames to fit the ps unit.
2. Parts - Service Manuals - Microfiche are non existent involving EPS for cat.
3. ATV aftermarket units get pulled off the market just about as fast as they appear.
I came across an aftermarket unit for the Arctic Cat Prowler that I believe I can make work and has great feedback for the Prowler units. It is called Electra Steer made by Wicked Bilt (pic attached). I sells for about a grand but I have found it for about 140 less at some dealers. My thoughts were if it could be squeezed into the frame with the steering post modified, you could run a switch to shut it off manually if you so wish or leave it on. As far as I know, it is on full time regardless of speed so a switch might be handy.
Maybe someone here has already bought this unit that can give measurements? Or someone that has found another setup they have questions on that can be explored.
Another idea I came across was a guy experimented putting in a EPS from a chevy cobalt (pic attached with tag on unit) but never commented back on the results and would not respond to my inquires. He stated he paid 150 for the EPS unit and was getting ready to start the steering post mod. Again this may work with an on/off switch. I have found these units as cheap as 40 bucks. They may need to be sealed considering the differences in the application. I do tend to cross a river or two.
Again this is just to explore as a winter project. I tend to tinker dreaming of the snow turning to mud.
