ATV will only run with lights on

Have 2000 Arctic Cat 300 ATV that runs rough until lights are turned on then it runs 100 percent. Pretty sure it's a short somewhere or maybe not.. Can anybody advise where to start?

Thanks in advance

Check the voltage at your battery when it is running. Could be your voltage regulator.
Will do.. should it be around twelve volts??
13.4 -14.7 is a good range. Check with lights on and off. Also check the battery after it has sat for a couple hours. It should be in the 12.3-12.7 range when it's not running
With lights off, regulator is showing 33 volts... same with lights on... Battery shows 12.7 after setting two hours
Your vr is shot I suspect
Better replace it ASAP to! That kind of voltage will fry stuff!

Like a battery?... noticed liquid had boiled out..

Yes that battery could be toast. More important you could have a fire from melting wires

Were your lights unusually bright? I'm surprised it didn't pop the bulbs. That was a sign on the old three wheelers that the VR was going bad. Lights would get really bright with the rpm and pop if you revved it out to high.
Im having the same kind of issue with my 2000 Artic Cat 400 4x4 it basically falls on its face without lights on or with low beams on runs better with high beams and if I use my winch for a minute when its acting up it will come out of it for a few minutes just putting it out there to see if you think it's the same thing looking for a second opinion
It’s your VR/Rectifier. Check the voltage at the battery when it’s running and tell us what you get.

It has a brand new battery just fyi, when it was not running it was at 13.53 while running it was at 16.60

16.60 is too high. It’s that with or without lights on. At idle?
I am not sure lol so I did it again and this is what I got With lights at idle17.35 and without lights at idle18.30 not running at 13.53 also for some reason my low beams aren't working right now either I am not sure if that is part of it or not
At that voltage you may have blown out the bulbs. 14.6 is usually the steady voltage no matter what rpm lights on or off when running.
Just to make sure im not misinterpreting anything , you are thinking the bulbs may be blown and also the VR/Rectifier needs replacement too?

Yes, too much voltage blows a 12v bulb.
That is exactly what is wrong. That’s why I wanted you to check the voltage at the battery, nothing to do with the battery. Needed to know the VR/rectifier output
