i've been asking around to alot of people in here about what i should put in for wieghts/springs/helix, and i've noticed there are tons of zr 700 owners around, unlike most other forums i have found. All and any input would be greatly appreciated, i want it to be strong out of the hole but still have top end, if possible, if not i want acceleration. i ride in Saskatchewan Canada so i am in 0-5000FT zone. it has an 1.25 track on it, the rest is pretty much stock. And what do you guys run for plugs in them, i've always ran BR9EYA, it came with them, but in the book they say like BR10_ _ _ plugs, i can't remember the exact number. Thanks alot guys/girls.

I had a black magic clutch kit in mine, it ran real strong with that in there. 59/54 helix, black orange drive spring. black red driven spring. 61g weights. Now I got the twin pipes on there and use 59/54 helix, 53g weights black orange drive, and black pink driven spring. hope that helps you out some.

thanks thats a good start, whats with the big drop in wieght going to the pipes, 61's won;t be to big?
I really really like your sled, I like the 2000 hood conversion, those hoods look so sweet, and you can get some really nice windshields for them! You Green and orange look great! i can;t wait to get my hand guards. Not sure to go green or orange i am thinking keep it the green machine.

The lighter weights combined with the right springs, give zr7cat more rpm's that the pipes need to make higher h.p.. he should be in the 8350 to 8400 range to get the most out of his twin pipes. If they over-rev, they lose alot of power. twins can be a head-ache to get to run at the correct rpm. It took me a little more than one season to get mine right where it should be. All done with the clutching. Engine tuning only takes an afternoon to get it right. Black Magic kit #80-2035 worked very well on my sled and I would suggest it to anyone( its for a stock single pipe) You can add reeds/timing key/ and proper jetting with this kit with no problems. the correct plugs are the BR9EYA. as 10's are a colder plug. The b/m kit has 61 gram weights and the helix is a secrect. Im sure someone could figure it out though. Start with the needle clip in the center position(3rd) and 330 main jets and 1 and 1/2 turns out on the white capped screws on the right side of each carb. You will probably go to 320 mains or even 310's depending on how warm/cold it is outside. Proper jetting and clutching may this sled into a contender. The other 700's of that era had more power. But I could always take them out of the hole and only the mxz700 could catch me at top end. I now have twin pipes and the mxz cant catch me at all.................tigger

thanks for the info, im trying to piece my own together, avoiud the costly kits, and i think i have to order black magic right outta the states, i don;t think my dealer orders from them, im trying to learn clutching so your bit of info was very helpful, what springs came with your kit also? the more combos i can get the better i can figure out what would work the best. Thanks for the carb info to, i'll be running in usually -10 - -25 Celcius weather. i'm going to look to see what i have in them.

zr7cat, did you get a chance to ride it with your new set-up? If so, what engagement rpm do you have and whats your peak rpm. I had a problem with the clutch kit(b/m) that went with the pipes, it did over-rev & high engagment(5300)and I played with it alot and finally talked to a good dealer and he set me up with a d&d set-up for the 700 w/twins. It still wasnt exactly right, but he worked with me on it and allowed me to try before you buy, so I now have it right. engagement is around 4400 and peak rpm 8400 with ski lift from corner to corner.( its kinda fun sitting on the gas tank to keep it from lifting) he gave me polaris weight 10-58's(58 gram) and now I'm at 10-60's (60 gram). I still may try 61 gram weights. i have them left over from the stock b/m kit. If you need the rest of my set-up, I will give it to you. If yours works with the b/m set-up, great!...................tigger

Yes I rode it for about 10 miles thanksgiving morning. It ran awesome. The clutch kit seems to be dead on. Ihad some tuning time on it last year with some D&D twins. I started off with the 61g weights and it seemed real sluggish when you mashed on the gas. When I went down to the 53g weights it really made a big difference. Last year I ran it with the black red driven spring in there which made it ingage a little high like you said. This year I changed it to the black pink spring which black magic suggests. It engages a lot lower now right around 4500. It maxis out right at 8400. It really pulls awesome on a long run. I think I am going to be pretty happy with them this year.

Thanks zr7cat, great to hear that the kits from b/m sure do work, why I had a problem, I dont know. But they(b/m) worked with me via e-mail to help me get this figured out as best that they could, I still have the complete kit from b/m(for the twins and the single for that much)) and I could have saved you a few bucks, but oh well, Its still nice to have some tuning parts to play around with. I will try the 59/54 again now that it runs in the right rpm. Im not afraid to mess with it and post the results. To surprise someone with this 99 ZR700 makes my day. I dont race other sled all that much but, when I do, they are suprised to say the least. 144 studs in the center belt only, lets it slide just a little, but from corner to corner, its the most fun I have ever had on a sled. the F7 I own is a totally different animal. My 99 can stay with it( not beat it though) till about 60 then goodbye. the F7's tail lights get smaller and smaller if you know what I mean..................tigger

wow thats nice! i hope i can get mine hanging in there better this year, i appreciate all your help with my experiment, might buy some **** before x mas break here and start tinkering, if theres snow! i'll let you know how it goes, and have any of you put reeds in these, they are kinda a pain to get to, so i was wondering if it was even worth it. keep the clutch info coming! lol i don;t want to have 4 sets of wieghts when im done or something stupid.

Good luck, I hope you get her dialed in. I too was wanting to put some reeds in there, but yes you do have to get into the motor. Boyeseen makes some reeds for our 700's. I think if I ever had to do something to the motor then I would install them but other than that I will just leave it the way it is.

If you have around 4000 miles on the sled, re-ring it. Do a slight clean up job on the ports with a dremel tool with the flexible extension. and add the reed(s) to each side. Its way easier than you think. It only takes 1 reed per side so it is very affordable. I used Carbon Tech- But boysen are just as good. .............tigger

My Zr700 has about 2500 miles on it. I have the Black Magic twin pipes and clutch kit. The clutch engages at 5200 rpm. I am going to try the yellow/white spring.
I am not knowledgable about the clutch weights and do not know how to change them. Also are the weights marked or do I have to find a coke dealer to tell me how many grams or ounces they are? I am also trying to quite things down a bit the silencer that came with the pipes make it sound like an overgrown chainsaw. I have fabricated an aluminum box with some baffles but it is still a bit much. Thanks in advance for the input.

Yes the weights should be marked. The regular clutch kit from black magic has 61g weights, with the twin pipes they are the 53g weights, this makes it run at a higher rpm on top end. You should be running 8400 rpms on top end and may even hit 8500. You need a clutch puller to get off your primary and change the weights. Once you get it off its easy to change. Mine engages at 5000 rpms.

Right now I have orange/black on the primary and Purple/black on the driven. I have not pulled the clutch to change springs so I do not what weights are installed. Clutch engages at about 5200-5300 rpm`s. One more thingThe sticker on top of the air box indicates it has been updated. What has been done? I have heard the CDI box from the 2000 model was a better unit, was this part replaced with the update? So many questions, so few answers.

:lovewinter: The b/m clutch kit comes with 61 gram weights for a single pipe? Iam trying to find the right setup for my 99 that i just picked up and have been looking into the stock spes in comparison to clutch kits. I do belive from stock they are equiped with 49 gram weights and run a gear ratios around 1.62. Top gear being 24 bottom 39. I wanted to go with 22/40, I have a couple sets of weight and by chance I am running 53 gram weights with a yellow/white spring in the primary. Haven't done anything to the secondary though. Do you think a 59/54 Helix will work with this being said that a b/m comes with 61 grams. That is a ton of weight to pull.
Keep the info coming this is really good.
