My 99 ZR500 EFI died on the trail. It is at the dealer now, confirmed that the stator has failed. No prior symptoms, just hard failure. Won't start.

I spoke with Stator Corp today in MA. They have a decent price ($199 vs $500 new) and 2-yr warranty.

However, just wondering if rewound stators are reliable. Anyone have advice (good or bad) for rewound stators?

I plan to add washers and drill holes for air flow, per many posts on this forum. Just want to prevent from breaking down again (NO FUN!).

If you like this sled, bite the bullet and get a new stator. I have tried two rebuilt stators and found they will work but I would get no top end power or RPMs. Total waste of time changing them out. Thought my problem was in the clutches after installing the rebuilts and after wasting 2 seasons of bad performance, I finally got a new stator and problem solved!!!! :super_happy:

I'll ditto that. I lost my first stator at 5000 miles on my ZL600efi. I sent it to Quebec for repairs. The rebuild only lasted about 400 miles. This time I sent it off to Mass. Basically the same result. Fortunately there was a two year warranty on this rebuild. I sent it back and had it done again. Then I sold the sled. I had drilled holes in the bottom of the housing and also installed washers to no avail. I hear all this talk about heat. If this is such a big problem then why did my original stator last 5000 miles without the holes or washer fix ? I would look into purchasing a new stator. I hear this works.

I'm taking your advice. I bought a NEW stator from Arctic Cat. I located many posts of riders who had theirs rewound and failed within a short amount of miles.

And yes, I'm having the holes drilled into the housing for air flow.

I did save roughly $75 by buying the part at an online AC parts warehouse. They assure me it is NEW and OEM, nothing used or rewound.

But, OUCH, that was expensive.
