Ok i have a 98 zr efi it is all new piston crank seals gaskets. I have 2 ecu's and 3 troddle bodys and two stators and it still wou'nt run right. I took it in to a arctic cat dealer for 3 weeks and he tested all the sensors and came back with all good but maybe the ecu or the troddle body so i bought a ecu and a troddle body and no change. It run great at top end 8500 rpm but the idle is about 900-1100rpm and it smokes really bad all the time. low to mid range sucks. I have a manual and have been though it twice and I'm almost ready to burn it have a nice big fire. Please if anyone has had these problem or has any good idea what maybe causeing it let me know or come to the fire Thanks tjloewe





UPDATE FIXED when i put the motor togher I replaced the intake boots with a after market SPI boots and after all the money and hours it comes down to a dumb over looked thing. The new boots sit in to the reed box and hold four reeds open. I hope these helps someone look for a little thing that can really give you a hard time. Does your ecu, injectors, and throdle match. They all have to have the same symbol on them, there is a circle, square, and triange. I don't know if that is the problem, but it might be.

yes all are same square i took to rob hanna's powersports a cat dealer and he looked all of that over I'm starting to thing he's dumb or he's $3000 computer is.

Is it fuel rich or oil rich, sometimes hard to tell. How do the plugs look? Check your oil usage, fill gas tank, fill oil resivoir and run it for awhile. refill gas and oil to the same level. do the math, should be 50-55-to one. Wife's ZL 700 was a slug, smoked and didn't run very good. 26 to one, adjusted to 50 to one, world of difference. Something you might want to check.

I checked the oil pump settings but the book is not easy to read but i think i have it right. the smoke seems to be more white then blue leads me to think gas butt is hard tell. so will look in to. i thought it maybe coolant but the bottle is not going down and i know what coolant smells like.

the plugs look wet but not that black but i took it out for about 20min last night to see if getting nice and warm would help but the field i was in looked like a nice thick fog and if i let it idle for a min you can't see the sled 3 feet away. ( looks like i have started the fire) LOL

not sure if this is possible, but just a thought... would the regulator be pooched and is keepin the fuel pressure too high? fuel pressure should be 36 psi if you have a gauge.

I have a fuel gauge and it reads a 35psi that is why i have 3 throddle bodys i have try all of them and it runs the same

I CHECKED THE OIL PUMP SEEMS TO BE GOOD THINKING GAS

35 psi is low ac manual says 37.9 + or- 2 psi boy your on the low side

How is the water pump seals? If they inner seal is bad it will allow coolant to get into the cranks case. It will cause these symptoms.

my factory cat manual says 36.2psi is what its supposed to be.

THE FUEL GAUGE I GOT OF EBAY ITS NOT THE BEST ITS 35-37 PSI PRETTY CLOSE TO SPEC THAT IS WHY I HAVE RULED IT OUT

I REBUILT THE MOTOR FROM THE GROUND UP AND THE WATER PUMP HAS TWO SEALS IT COULD BE THAT BE I FIND IT HARD BELIVE. I MAY HAVE TO TAKE THE MOTOR APART BUT I DID WANT TO.

Coolant from the water pump seals?.............good thought
If it runs ok but just smokes why not ride it for at least a tank of gas to confirm oil consumption...........seen lots of em where the oil pump all but dumps oil in the engine no matter where it's set, replacement cures it.

I have had motors that had a coolant leak and the oil in the manifold is usually milky white color

It only runs good at wide open lowend is a dog and mid range is like i have one cylinder

I have a 97 zr 440 and the 98 zr 600 efi with the way the one runs does any think i could pull 2500 for the both????????????????
