650 V2 Nightmare

4983 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Jimitheplumber74
I have a 2005 Arctic Cat 650 V2 That I recently got from a buddy. It had sat for 5 plus years before I started work on. It ran when I got it but only one of the vacuum valve slides were opening. I have run the carbs through my ultrasonic as well as replaced needles. Just recently I fixed the other slide valve and put on a idle screw(was missing before). Now its taking minutes of cranking to start and when it fires up its idling wicked high and dies off, all while gas is pouring out the drain lines. Any help would be great!

Did you install an inline filter ? If not all the 5 year old crud in the tank will just go right back in your carbs. Did you sync the carbs?

Actually no I have done neither but i did manage to stop the leak and now its just bogs if i give more than half throttle
Install an inline fuel filter to keep the crud out.

If you didn't remove and flush the fuel tank before reinstalling the carbs, when you turned the fuel on you washed any crud from the tank/fuel lines down into the carbs, the bogging and stalling at higher throttle is indicative of a plugged carb jet (usually caused my bad/dirty fuel) Synching the carbs is required when dealing with a 2 carb unit. you can get a service manual at Countrycat.com under technical information. I believe in the manual it dictates how to sync the carbs, this is also googleable and probably has videos

Take your time with these v2's, I polish my slides and make sure choke is free and not stuck, mine idles fast at start up as well but comes down a few minutes later think it's other than carb. needless to say check jets and idle circuit float height, lots of youtube sites. good luck

I cleaned em up with some fine sandpaper and they seem to be moving ok, separately is it normal for the steering to be to heavy to move when in 4x4 locked because I used it to plow today and I had to drop it back to 2 wheel drive just to turn

Yes 4wd will do that, I used metal polish on my slides.
To sink carb I just look down as they open and adjust as needed. Final fuel adjustment is on each side of carb very small screw front is hard to reach but they need adjusting too.

Yeah X2 steering is awful in 4wd, worse in diff lock.
I love power steering ❤
I too have had the same issue with a 650 v-twin that I previously owned. I bought it new and still I had problems with black crud getting in the carbs and holding open the needles and seats. Turned out that the fuel line was breaking down internally and depositing the debris in the fuel bowls. It was an easy fix once it was figured out but boy what a pain until then!
