I have a 98 300 4x. First problem (besides it being cold blooded) is when I would try to accelerate, I'd hit a certain rpm and the thing would fall on its face. Thru all gears. Decided to go thru the carb. Reinstalled it and now the thing will start with choke on but as soon as you hit the throttle it does. When you adjust the choke it dies. Basically it will start and idle with full choke and that's it.

It's not getting enough fuel it sounds like. Is the petcock allowing enough fuel?
Is the float adjusted correctly?
Are the jets put back in correctly?
Is the diagphram ripped or cracked?
Is it seated correctly in the groove?

I have attempted to share a thread below. I just went through something similar on my 300 2x4 (same carb). Check the things in the post above and you may find something helpful in my post. I had a few problems, but in the end it was a valve train issue.
