2004 TRV 500 bogs/sputters after new carb

Ok peeps. Finally signed up after lurking because I’m just stumped. I own an 02 500i(red) 04 TRV 500, and 04 dvx 400. I threw a kit in the 500i last year and it’s running great but I had a lot of leftovers in that kit. This winter I was running the tvr and plowing. It started running very poorly and not starting well. So this spring. I looked at ordering a kit for the TRV. Well I saw a niche china carb with electric choke for 50 bucks new so I pulled the trigger. Got it in and she fired right up like new. Problem is that I give any throttle, she spits and sputters and backfires, and I’m eventually able to get it up to pretty for throttle, but it’s not right I have new gas in there a new plug seafoam in there and still the same issue so I took it off, and I took all the extra pieces I had in the kit for the 500i and through it at the factory carb. new gasket, new little diaphragm, spring main jet secondary jet I did not have a new pilot jet but I cleaned out the old one and it seemed fine. I put the factory carb back on and it did start up much better than it did before but now I’m having the same issue with giving it any throttle and it’s spitting sputtering and backfiring and honestly I’ve taken this thing apart so many times I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong . Any help would be awesome. I’m in the twin cities

You’re on a forum asking for help, and obviously want to save money. Forums are great for this. The information is out there, you just need to apply it.
Especially if you ain’t rich you gotta do it yourself. If you are rich, then save yourself the time and hassle of research and sweat and tears and take it in to a reputable shop.
It’s as simple as that. I’m just here trying to throw ideas at you.

I get it and I don’t want to seem unappreciative, I’m just at the end of my own personal technical skill set and a growing frustration at what should be a somewhat easy diagnosis has morphed into throwing my hands up and paying someone to give me their in person diagnosis at the very least for a reasonable fee. That’s where I’m at. I feel like this is so much a fuel/air thing that I’m going to feel pretty stupid if it’s some simple. I just tested spark and the thing jumps to .50. I just don’t know anymore.

I think it could possibly be as simple as the air/fuel mixture screw, I would start with the screw all the way in (which is full lean) and work ur way out by either 0.5 turns or 0.25 turns depending on how close you think it is.

I defiantly messed with that quite a bit and I went and got a kit for the factory carb and replaced all of the Jets, air/fuel needle, spring o ring and washer, bowl gasket today for the same effect. I just don’t know what else I can do.
It’s a fuel screw.

It’s a fuel screw.
Tried it in 1/2 turn incriminates No change whatsoever.
You have to wait a while between each adjustment, it doesn’t take immediately

Will try that. Will wait at least an hour between at least. I’m doubtful though.
Can you just swap the carb from your other 500 to at least eliminate the cat issue?

I suppose I could. The other one is at a different location and I honestly didn’t think to rip apart a good running quad just to see if the carb would work on the TRV
This is the same problem that a Polaris 500 has when the camshaft lobe gets eaten away. Food for thought...

Is the slide opening when you give it throttle?

The magnets on the flywheel can become weak over time on any machine. I've seen a 650H1 do that. If they are weak, this can cause this exact issue, just like the 400 when the magnets come loose.

The slide does start to come open until it starts to bog out. Then it spits fuel in my eye lol when it bogs. I can get it to about 1/8 throttle or about 3-4000 rpm before it starts happening
did you try using a screwdriver to manually open it when it was trying to run? It sounds a little like a bad camshaft, but you'd have to investigate further.

Is the exhaust plugged up somehow?

No I didn’t try the screwdriver but that’s a pretty good idea. I’ll try that when I get home I’m almost at the point where I want to find a tech who knows more about this kind of stuff than I do so I can see what it’s going to be to get her back on the road.
Had a similar issue with my 06 TRV 500.
Check the fuel lines for cracks. They may not leak, but can suck air.
Change the little plastic fuel pump under the seat. They are cheap and easy to replace.
