I picked up a 2002 zr800 and theres a small black box wired into some wires, it says hyper performance on the box, i was curious what its for i can't find anything online about it

"Wired" is a stretch. Those connectors are garbage and will fail/cause you headaches in no time.

Being yellow and black wires, its a sure bet it is wired to bypass the ECT sensor.

in the early days of efi the computers were real dumb.
lots of companies made items like that to "trick" the computer into thinking temps were different.
so they would add or remove fuel verses the factory tune.

i would remove it.
it is not like a boondocker controller where you adjust the fuel map.
