2000 was 23/40

...if I can get just the sprockets/gears, can I use the 1999 chain w/the 2000 gears?

Sure you can. It will wear out very quickly though. Both the gears and the chain. 72 pitch chain on both machines. I went with 2000 gearing on my 99. It didn't lose any top end and it pulled just a tad quicker.
