I own a 1998 AC Pantera 580 EFI that was second or third hand when I bought it. The tach never worked for the 2nd owner so I decided to investigate. My shop manual for this sled shows only a yellow and a brown wire connected to the tach. The manual also states that any yellow coded wire will work for the tach signal. The tach on my sled, however, has 1 Black, 1 Yellow, and 1 Red wire screwed directly into the back of this tach? The model number for the tach is 0620-200. Does anyone know what the red lead is for? I am using an "official" Arctic Cat Service Manual specifically written for the 1998 Pantera 580 EFI and the EXT 580 EFI DLX. The wiring diagrams (color codes) in the manual do not match my sled exactly. My sled was built in Sep 97 - is it possible there was a wiring change in late production?

The main wiring harness color codes exactly match the tach receptacle color codes so this appears to be the correct tach. I have tested a known good 0620-200 tach on this sled, but even this one does not function. Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips? If I can't trust my service manual I am lost!

Bummed Out in New York - I just can't ride without a tach!

Your sled is a little unique when it comes to this part of it. Your sled is one of the few Arctic Cat sleds that uses a full 3 phase stator. It's similar to ATV and motorcycles.

Normally the tach works off the frequency of the lighting coil and is directly hooked up to the AC power to give an RPM reading since the frequency of the AC power increases as the engine RPM increases. Yellow and Brown are the colour codes for these systems.

Looking up that part number it describes the tach as a DC narrow band. I'm guessing your entire sled runs off DC voltage so the Tach needs to get it's pulse from a different source other then the yellow and brown wires we normally see on these sleds.

Red is sometimes used to code the 3rd phase in 3 phase systems if this tach does get 3 phase power fed to it. Red could also mean positive DC power, Black is negative DC power and the yellow is your signal wire coming from somewhere.

Can you check to see if you have DC voltage across the Red and Black?

Here's a picture of one I just finished up. If you look online at parts diagrams they don't represent it properly in the images.

No prob, I'm still figuring stuff out all the time. I didn't know any of these sleds, from these years, were designed this way until I received Tyler's stator.
