Hey,

I have an '03 F7. We finally got snow the other day and I noticed that the tach always works but the speedometer goes on and off. It seems like both times I used it, it took about 4-7 minutes before the speedometer started working?

My father had an 01 ZR and the speedo never worked and later the bearing that the housing of the speedometer cable goes in blew up. I am hoping something similar wont happen to the F7.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

I am currently having the same problem with my 05 f6 when I took it out for the first time the other day the speedometer and tach quit working for about 20 mins then came back on. Any help for both of us would be appreciated!

my group of riders all have 05 or newer f-5,6, and 7s. with the diamond drive units. every one of us lost the speedometers around 2000 miles or so. the problem is the sensor mounted on the back of the drive unit [for the speedometer] cat has had huge problems with this sensor and i believe has improved it. I think the chain case models use the same, or similar sensor so i would bet thats your problem. I dont know how much they are cause ours were under warrantee, but like all snowmobile parts its probably $150 bucks for a $2 part made by nine year olds in a korean labor camp. jim

The 03/04 models and the 05-up Reverse models all use a magnetic pickup located in the LH Lower driveshaft bearing retainer. There really isn't a lot to go wrong w/this system, as it's just a little magnet located in the end of the shaft. Only way to check the magnet is to remove the bearing retainer/voltage regulator/speedo pickup module from the end of the driveshaft. Chances are, if you are having these problems, it's in the speedo module itself. The 05 diamond drive models did have a big problem with the speedo sensors, and Cat has corrected the problem for 06 and with replacement parts for the 05's.

Okay well mine has 2400 miles on it so 05ST660 you could be right saying you all lost them around 2000 miles. I am taking it in next week or so for the recalls on the gas tank and steering and I got the extended warranty on it so I will have them check it out for me. Thanks for the info.

same with my 05 f7 speedo quit after 42 miles on it! called and the service dude said it was the sensor. he said its 16 dollars but you have to move the diamond drive or something to replace it? anyone ever did it themselves? sled is under warrenty but dont want the sled sitting there for a week. the guy said it takes about a 1/2 hour. any help on a easy way to do it yourself would be nice.

guys check your wire harness under the hood where it folds when you close it. Its up front by the nose. The problems I found were that under the plastic wire harness cover some wires were cracked where they folded. Just check it I found it and fixed it over a year ago and my speedo works the ****.
