loose shifter

Hey everyone, I have a 2008 700 diesel and the shifter is loose. I started it up the other day and drive it to the camper and let it idle and when I went to leave, it would not shift, it was stuck in N. then all of a sudden it went loose. I followed it back to the engine side on the left and it is very loose and where the shifter knob connects at the engine (on the outside) it partially come out then stops. Does that take sense? Im hopping someone can help me figure it out. Thanks

If you can remove front rack and front plastics, it will be easier to service. Next, if you haven't done so, download a parts manual from<mymowerparts.com> to help identify any worn parts. It's really quite a simple set up, the upper end connects to the shift lever, bottom end goes to the transmission. There is a coil spring in the upper part, I replaced that in mine with a heavier valve spring from a lawnmower or something else to give it a more positive engagement. I suspect the vibration of the diesel contributes to stuff like tis wearing out. Reminds me of riding a Harley, haha.
