Over the weekend, I made the trek from Ohio down to Lawton Oklahoma to pick the big girl up. 2200 miles in 3 days wasn't actually that terrible.
The owner bought it brand new in 08 in Alaska for moose hunting but then got re-stationed in Oklahoma 6 months later. He said it was one of only 4 to get delivered to AK. Since he never used it in OK and is getting deployed june 15th, he put it on Craig's list and I happened to find it the same day. The rest is history now
The previous owner kept it so clean it's not even funny. It never saw a night outside, rain or mud. Only snow and desert dirt. It looks brand new everywhere except for a couple light branch scratches on the plastic and racks. The brake rotors were actually slightly rusty from sitting in the garage so much haha.
Came as pictured including the 28" mud hogs with a brand new matching spare and a hard gun case with the speedrack mounts.
Stopped at Meramec cavers in Missouri on the way back. It barely fit on my 5x8 trailer haha.
Since the previous owner left it bone stock mechanically and I run a diesel shop, it couldn't stay that way! The thing was so slow it's not even right. I don't know how the PO drove it 400 miles that way haha.
The day after I got home from the trip, I bumped timing a few degrees, adjusted the injector link bar, and gave the torque limiter screw a few turns till we got a few puffs of black. It's not a rocketship by any means, but it'll actually spin tires on dirt now. It's acceptable for the moment.
While I was at it, I removed the spark arrestor and welded on a piece of scrap 1.5" SS tube. Used a cut off wheel on the factory tip to mimic mine. Some black engine enamel finished it off. Snorkels are next
Once I catch up on work at the shop, I'll play with the high idle setting/governor weights to get up to 4200-4400 rpms. I need to get the valve spring specs to make sure we won't have any valve float first though. Once I get that figured out, there's no reason this thing can't turn a few more revs. IDI diesels love rpm's and this thing is built so stoutly it won't be an issue mechanically.
The last thing I'm planning to do before fall is give it what every diesel needs, boost
! Going to grab one of these little guys and go to town. RHB31 Motorcycle Turbocharger Quad Small Turbo RHB3 | eBay
. I'll be sure to post up lots of pics in this thread when I do it. Hardest part looks like it's going to be hiding all the pipes under the plastic.
I'm glad to finally have a Green machine again and be back with the crowd
. Been 4 years since my 02 400 4x4 was totaled by a friend and I always had the itch for another AC.
