Blown Engine After Reflash 2018 xf 8000

Hello everyone. I have a 2018 xf8000 Crosstrek that I bought as a new leftover in January. I had the flaming exhaust issue and I brought it to the dealer a couple weeks after I bought it to have them look at it. They said I had a cracked resonator so they replaced the exhaust and reflashed it. Everything seemed fine until I went on a 270 mile trip on Thursday. Got to the lodge and it was shooting flames again. I brought it to the local Cat dealer the next day and they told me the new flash just came out so they reflashed it and I was on my way. Less than 20 miles later my engine seized up. I also heard of one other seld blowing up right after it was reflashed and one burning trailside while I was riding.

I was just posting to see if anyone else is experiencing this or if it was just coincidence that 3 of us had major issues after the reflash.

here we go , Boy am I glad I gotta Suzuki

Owning a Thundercat is like having a totally hot wife..... All of your friends want to see it, feel it and check it out..... They all want to know what it is like to ride it, but if they only knew how much time and money it takes to keep one up, they would call you a fool!

Seen in a DOO forum

"Of all the 850 vs Sidewinders/Thundercat/ZR 9000's; you are the first I have ever heard that beat one. I know the 850 is strong but it's down 30 hp from the turbo sleds.
I have a low slung fully built( by a well know engine builder) 3 cylinder 800 cc that made multiple dyno pulls over 200 hp on a calibrated Land and Sea dyno and I barely pull my buddy on his stock Thundercat. And I do have video."

Things on NASA headphones that are not good;
"That supposed to be like that?" "What the hell was that?" "Did you just pee in your spacesuit"

Crickets is all you hear.....where are the faithful factory guys who lurk here to dispel all myth and rumors about problems with the C-tecs????

I hope your dealer makes it right with you. Likely they will find something else to blame it on though, good luck.

No myths or rumors here I've already burnt up two sleds bellypan . Haven't blown a motor yet but with these exhaust temps I would bet I'll smoke one soon.

I myself have a 2019 XF high country limited. The machine has 162 miles on it and just blew up!!! three weeks ago with 94 miles on it i was out riding and the machine locked up dealership came a got it since i was all by myself they let it sit over night and next morning it started right up to my surprise because it was so locked you couldn't even grab the clutch and move it. So dealership told me its good to go and i could come it. so i took it home did a little riding and then this Saturday and well after ten miles it is done!!! but i did notice some backfire after it was shut off guessing that had to do with the ECM re-flash. which i didn't learn about till after talking to my dealer who had the service bulletin as of 2-28-19 informed me today that he had it but it wasn't his responsibility to call his customers to stop riding until after re-flashed. needless to say i am disappointed in CAT for not sending out a mass email but even more disappointed in my dealership for not informing me about a service issues on a two month old sled!!

To the guys with the catastrophic failures are you running non-oxygenated or non ethanol fuel?

I know poor fuel quality can reek havoc in 2 stroke motors.

I wish the best to you guys and hope your dealers treat you good.

I got a letter in the mail regarding the reflash from Textron.

Ethanol free premium only. Ours suffered an oil injection pump failure.

I run non ethanol 99% of the time. Always 91 or 93. I did fill up once on the way up with 91 with ethanol. I had 940 miles when mine blew. Dealer is saying parts are back ordered until May. They have been calling around trying to find parts so we'll see.

All right!

Were these high volume gas stations or small mom and pop stores that may not move that much premium? Old fuel?

I don't know how the intakes are on the non M sleds but the M intakes leave much to be desired.

I have read of a few burn downs due to water ingestion from deep snow. A lot of gaps/big gaps in the intake tract that snow can be ingested. water pools right down in front of the throttle bodies. I put a pre filter from mountain fit hoods into the nose cone to "hopefully" remedy this.

The Ctec's are high strung 2 strokes with reduced oil consumption. Neither of those are a recipe for longevity.

I have read of adding a capfull of oil directly to the fuel when filling to attempt to bring ratio up in Ctecs. Imo, cant be any worse than break in mode.

The old Zuki motor would drink oil which may provided a very good buffer to bypass any of these issues. It used much more than the C-tec. That can't be denied.

I might start throwing a capfull or 2 stroke oil in with every fill up. I already did my best to head off water ingestion so we will see.

Also I fill up from high volume fuel source plus add Klotz octane boost just to help with any skittishness of the fuel quality.

Again, I wish you guys the best of luck and I hope your dealers treat you right.

Eta - [email protected] that's a legit failure. No oil = no bueno.
