Pretty easy fix and cheap. The part is is just over $1.00. It is a magnet located in the drive shaft behind the voltage regualor which is behind the secondary clutch. Remove the belt, remove the secondary, remove the 3 nuts holding the voltage regulator on. In the end of the shaft there is a magnet that sits in a machined recess. Likely is has broken or has a chip in it. Remove what is left and go to the dealer. The part number is: 0630-167. Some say to use a light dab of super glue on the magnet before installing, some will say not needed. If you do then make sure none is on the part you see. Then just bolt everything back on and you are all set.

See the pic, the magnet is number 6.

Mikef7 I have a similar problem to Dave. My 2003 F7 speedometer works sometimes, other times it is showing a way lower speed than we are traveling. I first noticed this when it seemed we had went a lot further than the odometer stated and my sons F6 showed the distance I thought we went corectly. I then started watching the speed and it was slow, other times looked OK. I took the voltage regulator off the other day and I can see a round magnet that "appears" to be alright. Can the voltage regulator number 0630-165 be tested, do they act that way, can magnet still be the problem? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thank you, Mike Shepherd

It uses a magnet and a reed switch pickup to detect the pulses. The reed switch pickup part is the likely culprit. If it's built into the regulator then you'll be changing it. I put a electronic gauge onto my 04 900 and modified a 03 F7 wiring harness into place to run it.
