There's been a little discussion in the 4-Stroke forum about using an emergency recoil strap. Since it seems that most sleds these days don't have them in the tool kit from the factory, many have not seen them or know how they are used. They are an excellent tool to have, and I strongly recommend purchasing or making one to keep tucked away in case of a little bad luck.

Mine came from a tool kit on a ZR, and I've held onto it for many years. Here's what it looks like when it's all folded up.

When it's unrolled, it is about 4' long. It is a canvas type material, about 1" wide.

Now, you must wrap it counterclockwise (as you face the clutch) around the clutch towers. Tuck about an inch or two into the tower so it "grabs" and start wrapping. When you're done, leave yourself a little room to get your hands on it. After everything else on and ready, give it a pull!

This same principal has been accomplished using everything from tow ropes to boot laces. As long as you make sure when you pull it, PULL ALL OF THE ROPE OUT OF THE CLUTCH!!! If you don't the strap will get wrapped up on the moving clutch, and make a real mess.

Anyway, for those who haven't seen this before, I hope it helps. Happy trails!

Good post, Wicked. Some of the guys around here has had to use their's, including yours truly. Some of us still have the rope breaking issue, but with soaking it in Wesson for 2 days does help. It's easy once you pratice a little. wink.gif

I have used one on many sleds in the past and will likely have to in the future. Its a life saver when your ten miles from home.

I used this setup on my zert with a busted recoil for almost half a season. The only thing i would be causiouse about is the "tucking" part. If that thing doesn't slip out your arm will be pulled off. I just wrapped mine around the outside if the sheeve- overlaping the whole thing. my .02 cents. siterock.gif

I got that tip from a dealer-service manager who knows his stuff. From what I've observed there's two types of rope "wear"; the vibrating section while idling (looks like a guitar string) and the rubbing on the corners (tubes, guides) when you are pulling it. The oil lubricates it. I suppose any oil might work, just that he recomended that brand. I've noticed 3x the life of a rope-even the OEM. The years before I was breaking 2 ropes per season. Now Im still on the rope from the last season.

Also on that note-if you do break it, either install the new rope (I carry one) right there, before starting up or take the coil assy, off. If you leave it on, with a broken rope there's a chance the assy will get crunched up in inside, increasing your repair cost greatly. This is not happen to me; just read about it. Look at it this way-you'll need to repair it sometime, so why not on the spot; then you won't have to be concerned about it later. If your buddies get huffy while waiting, then consider the source.

Great thread n a f9 !!

And all this time I have been tieing the rope onto my buddys bumper and having him tow me home! slaphappy.gif -Just kidding...The emergency rope is used almost as often as the recoil on my sled! With a big bore or real high compression engine it's a good idea to start your sled with that first thing in the morning cold.gif instead of ripping your recoil rope out! wall.gif (Ihave done that 4 times in the last two seasons!) An 8" clutch turns alot easier than a 3" recoil can! woot.gif
