Pictures of the piss poor welds on a 2008 Thundercat 3.1 differential. This ought to scare you if you ride over 5 MPH or so. <grin> Are other years and models the same? ummm Maybe, Maybe not. But does seem like it's been more of a problem on the 2008 models but not unheard of for other years either.

Also a good testament for Redline Shock proof gear lube, 1700 miles on this differential, several hundred miles in 4x4. There is No, ZERO gear tooth wear. Not even any wear marks, shiny teeth or nothing that would indicate wear or friction. The teeth look completely un-used and new. Also the reason for the funny color, Redline shock proof gear lube is Pink

I have heard the MP's are doing it because of the SLD
You are running along in 4wd and you hit the gas hard, the SLD slips and put s all of the torque to the front axle....
Then BANG...busted diff
Orrrrrrrrr
They didn't fix the weld problem for '09

They really need to invest in some heavier duty front and rear diffs for these quads.

WVABEER---Keep us posted on what actually broke in the front diff on that 550

After I read this,

My quad has...what feels like something binding in the front end, my trail riding doesn't usually hit very high speeds. 50km/h average.

Could this be the start of the end for my front end????

Did they get this solved for 2010? I am getting a 2010 450 and was wondering if this issue was solved by now?

Most of the 08's and some early 09's had the problem. You can break any of them if you go to too big of a tire. I would say you should be fine with your 010 450. That is going to be my next machine, as soon as they add power steering to it.

I know this isnt exactly the same problem but has anyone had their front driveshaft strip out on their machine, either in front of the engine or just before the front diff. i went to lock mine in about a month ago so i could go check some calves and when i went to go through a stream all i heard was grinding when i hit the throttle so i wouldnt get stuck. limped it home and looked at the front end and it was stripped at both ends. not very happy about it, since i dont use the 4wd very much and dont abuse it at all. any info would be great
