500 fan cooled motor

I'm looking at a 96 Z440 with a 500 fan cooled motor. Seller is telling me it has a Spirit 500 motor also from a 96. From what I can tell there weren't any sleds with a 500 fan in 96.

What can anyone tell me about the 500 fan. Good motor?

Thanks,
Dave

Good motor.... Dependable motor as long as it hasnt been dicked with. I think what you are talking about is a late 80's early 90's 500.It is what the AFS sleds used. leave the carb stock and it will be dependable. If it has alot of miles it may need a topend. Had a 89 cougar when I was a kid. really simple sled. not alot of power but kept up with the rest.

Thanks for the info. Apparently it was rebuilt about 3000 kms ago before it was put in the sled.

How would it compare to a 95 440 fan for power? I have a 95 Z440 so know the power and performance of it. Just wondering how much faster/quicker the 500 would be. I know I'm not going to be setting any speed records but it's fast enough for what I want to do.

The variables between the two motors are so different. The peak HP is different in both motors which would make the clutching different. They are both good motors the 440 you can run a little more RPM. The 500 in my experience is not made to push any limits.
