How do you remove the fuel gage?

The float on my 01 ZR800 got stuck. The float somehow turned a little so it was no longer riding between the two posts. I got it popped back in so it goes up and down with the fuel but now the metal strip that goes from the float to the gauge cam loose from the gauge. So my question is how does that whole assembly come out? Does the gauge unscrew? Do you pop it up with a screw driver? It doesn't seem to turn or pry off. Didn't want to break it so I thought I'd ask before going further. Don't really need the fuel gauge but I like everything to be perfect on my stuff. Thanks Mike

The gauge is just pressed into a rubber gasket. Carefully pry it up with a screwdriver or similar.

Thanks, is it worth prying it up to fix? Do you think it will leak once I pry it up and push it back on?

I have the same problem on my ZR 600, fuel leaks out and it doesnt work. After its been pried out can I just press it back into place once ive fixed it? Im guessing theres just a rubber gasket in there that can be replaced?

9 out of 10 you will be fine. Worst case you may need to put a touch of silicone or something on if the gasket is a little hard. You can soften the gasket by soaking it in a can of gas once you remove it. Thing that sucks is that I don't think you can get a gasket separately. They sell a gauge and gasket as a unit, but not separately. I personally would still fix it because it would drive me crazy having a non-working fuel gauge.

Oh yeah. It drove me crazy enough that I spent the $45 for a new gauge and gasket and I have a clear fuel tank.

Hey I am thinking about putting a fuel gage on my 2001 mountain cat. Does it have to be on the side of the tank or could I put it on the gas cap?
