98 ZR possible stator problem?

I have a 98 ZR 600 EFI that has an intermittent bog to it. It will take off like a rocket and then all the sudden feel like i hit the kill switch until I let off the throttle again and it comes back. It does it a lot. I'm very familiar with the whole Throttle safety switch and all that has been bypassed already.

I'm not sure if it's fuel or spark related but it seems more fuel. I tested the stator and it read:

Brown/Green 450 ohms 394 426
Brown/Black 495 ohms 435 474
Green/Black 45 ohms 41.2 44.3

The first readings are cold readings. Sled sat for 2 days and I got those readings and then started it up for about 2 mins and rechecked. Seems like its out of spec but it doesn't seem to be too far out. It runs decent and only intermittently bogs.

maybe do a search on stator problems and you should find a bunch of results. Either that or send kev or blaine a pm and see what you get.

Those stator specs are fine for below freezing temps. I always seem to have that same sort of bog, early season, until I get a chance to run a fresh tank of fuel through it.

Might want to try checking the throttle position sensor. I unknowingly removed mine off my 98 ZR 600 EFI and when I put it back on I had the same bog you describe. I adjusted it to what the specs say and it solved it. In my signature below is a link to how to check it and how to fix it if need be.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick replys. Much appreciated. The guy I got the sled from said something about the fuel maybe not being all that great. Also told me he removed the throttle bodies and boots and examined everything. Replaced reeds and both boots. Told me the motor had been rebuilt about 200 miles ago. He works on sleds and is opening a repair shop and told me it was a spring in the throttle. I assumed it was for the TSS so I just disconnected it.

Will definitely get some isopropyl in it and a fresh tank of fuel. The guy didn't seem like he knew everything so I could see him having removed the TPS sensor. Will check the specs on that tonight yet and post back. Thanks again

look for a loose ground coming from the stator or somewhere around there. It should go to a bolt holding on the recoil. Mine broke off, and it did the exact same thing. It was a huge PITA. My stator was fine after checking resistance, and it wasn't until I redid the ground that it worked fine.

Looking for a 1997 ZR 440 in MB or Sask

The stator ground was hooked up but there was a ground not hooked up to the frame from the motor. I also tested the TPS and got only 450 ohms when it shoulda been 850. I adjusted it to about 860 but haven't had a chance to ride it yet. Hoping all is fixed. Will update once i figure it out.

The primary coil is starting to die. When a factory stator with a 450 ohm spec starts to go under 440 or 435..it is a tell tale sign it is on its way out.

I took the sled out today for a test ride and it ran perfect. Rode it about 1/2 mile and then a few blocks to a friends garage to fix the headlights on a buddies sled for him. I let him drive my sled to get some tape and he came back and all was good. The weather got bad and had blowing snow and got much colder out. Got done about an hour later and went to start my sled and it died about 30 seconds later. Restarted right away and took off on it and it started bogging again like before. Misfiring and backfiring.

Got to a friends place a few blocks away and checked under the hood and noticed my plug boot on the PTO side wasn't seating fully anymore. Drove it again and it had the same bogging symptoms. I filled up with premium fuel after I had it running good earlier tday. Also put some red Heet in too. Could I have water in my gas and filling up made the water move around? Could the stator be doing this because the temp got colder all the sudden? Being christmas time and all I cant afford 150 dollar stator rewind at the moment. Hopefully it comes out of it when I do some riding tomorrow.

We all understand how hard it is to spend $ to get it fixed and I'm not trying to be mean, but it won't get any better on its own...only worse.
