Sled: '98 ZR600EFI LE, '99 ZL500EFI, '02 ZR800
08-09 Mileage: 300
07-08 Mileage: 550
Cylinder re-chroming??

I have a '98 ZR600EFI with ~6000mi. Decided to freshen it up by getting a new set of pistons, rings, pins, top end gasket set, etc... Tore it down last night. Pistons and cylinders look pretty decent, but I haven't mic'd them to see how worn they are. Will I need to rechrome the cylinders if I only replace the pistons? I would at the very least hone the cylinders.

if their not gouged up hone them with a ball hone and ya should be good

Honing is just to remove the glaze from the cylinder walls so that the rings will seat. Stock size pistons and rings are used after a light ball hone.

If the cylinder is scored and a the hone doesn't get rid of it, then the cylinders will have to be sent out for re-plating. They don't sleeve modern sled cylinders. They plate it with a nickel compound and then the plating company will hone it to the proper stock size dimension.

Cylinder re-chroming??-900-rebuild-2.jpghi there thanks have any idea as to the cost for that to be done???? having the heads refurbished I mean!!!!!have three extras that came with my machine and there in ruff shape but would like to get them done for backups thanks

Probably cheaper to buy good used ones. With big bore stuff you don't always get 'stock' either so be cautious.

After washing cylinders look into the edge of the ports. They most likely will have a haze or shadow around the ports. This needs to be removed. I use an old tooth brush. When you think they are as clean as can be (after air drying with compressed air) take a new white paper towel and put some transmission fluid on it and rub the cylinders well and it will still pull metal particles out. It works!

Honing cylinder walls of the glaze is removed, so that the ring will seat. After the stock pistons and rings with ball of light exercise. If the cylinders are honed not score and A, get rid of it, then the issue must be re-plated cylinders. They do not set a modern cylinder sled.
