So I when I pulled my motor I let the rope slip into the recoil. So I decided to try and replace the old rope with some rock climbing rope. The spring unwound in my face. I though I had it together correct but I bent the spring a little. Is my spring ruined? I cant figure out how the inner tab connects to the plastic wheel. I used the bench, nail, vise grips method. but screwed up the way the spring is wound I think. Thanks
It looks like it is bent in the pic but ya should be able to straighten it out, spring steel is usually very forgiving. You need to get it wound in the outer case first then put the center in and it should catch the spring then install rope. I would get some recoil rope from arctic cat, it has lube impregnated to allow it to slip easily thru the different holes.
Ya I think this recoil is the harder to put together than a skid or a motor. I think I am going to bring it to the dealer and get some of that rope with lube in it, and see if he will wind it up for me. What the hell did I do to this spring?I dunno When I opened up the recoil there was a kinda back loop in the end of the spring. Is that form the previous owner or is that stock? what dose a new one look like? so I can try and bend it back. I am Just a little nervous about something braking off and going into the coil. thanks
NOW THAT I SEE THE SPRING LAID OUT IT SEEMS TO BE BENT PRETTY TIGHT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, I WOULD PROBABLY REPLACE SPRING. WOULDNT WANT TO END UP ON THE TRAIL W/A BROKEN RECOIL. ALTHOUGH I KEEP A STRAP OF NYLON TO WRAP AROUND THE PRIMARY CLUTCH JUST IN CASE. (cheap and light insurance)
Ya I am going to get a new spring and cord form the dealer. maybe he will wind it for me. I never had to jump my sled but I keep some rope on hand in case. thanks
