1992 Jag 440

Hiya...

Just received 2 very nice clean 1992 Jag 440s and a trailer for free. The only issue I have with them is the skies. I would like to find plastic skies for them. As you can see in the pick the sled is mint and is very strong but the skies are rusted. I would imagine this is from the back of the car throwing up the salt etc.

I am also curious if there is a way that I can mess with one by installing a second carb as a fun project. Just upgrade it a bit. I don't mind spending a few bucks on them as they fit my wife and I very well.

Give me some ideas.

Thanks

There were Jags of that vintage that had 2 carbs. I think at that time they were called Jag Special and later Jag Z. You would need the intake manifold and throttle cable and a 2nd carb. Check with the snowmobile salvage dealers, I might be cheaper than you think to do it.

That particular year, they did offer a Jag Special with dual carbs. Parts diagrams should be easy to find to look at the differences.

Things that come to mind that you would need include, throttle cable, carb, carb boot, manifold, oil line, etc. Because the Jag Special provided slightly higher HP and peak RPM, you may need to change clutching to take advantage of the different in revs and hp.

My personal opinion is that the sled you have there is almost mint. I would leave it as is and run it. To add a second carb will only slightly increase hp, and increase fuel use. That engine is bulletproof. Run it and enjoy it!

I would just sand blast the skis, paint them, and run the sled.

I put plastic skis on my 94 Puma. There was some metal removal involved but it turned out great!

If I could ask one more question in this thread - what would be the best type of plugs to put in these motors.

I had the same sled a while back and if I remember correctly those spindles are a little different and may require some modification to fit plastic skis..... I had to grind my spindles a bit to get plastic skis to fit..... Good luck!
