Hi, I have an original 1972 Panther, that is in excellent to mint condition. My question is that the hood is dark grey, rather than black. The hood is original, and other than a slight spider crack, it's in great cond, still very smooth and shiny. I have heard from other people familar with Arctic Cat that occasionally in the early 70's that the color tint would be off slightly in the beginning or end of a production run, but they would let it go through anyway. I am just wondering if anyone can confirm this for me. I have taken this sled to some shows, and have a hard time convincing some judges that this is an orig. hood. It has taken 3rd place, but I might be able to get a 1st place if I can provide proof. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks

The only time I have seen a Gray hood on an older cat is if it is sun faded. Do you have any pics we could see? Is it gray in areas that the sun wouldnt have hit, like under the lip that sits in the belly pan or under the edging strip on the backside? If it is, then we may have a mystery.

That is what I thought originally also, but the whole hood is gray even in places that would have been shaded. The color is very consistent, it’s not blotchy, or darker on one side, like I think it would be if it were faded by the sun. I’ll find some pics and post them.

[attachment=107749SC00255.JPG]Thats one thing about the old Cats, each one is unique.
I have five 72 Cheetahs. Four with black hoods and one with the dark gray hood.
I also have three 72 Pumas and one has the same shiny dark gray hood.
All of the vents are dark black, even on the gray hoods.
I have also seen a number of other 72's with the same light hoods.
I do not beleive it is sun fade.
