Battery not staying charged

hello all, 2007 500 atv, after jumping it off I replaced the battery and it wont stay charged. What did I do to it? Any ideas? If I run it often it does ok... but if it sits a few days then its dead. Maybe i fried something or caused a ground problem?

thanks

So this is a new battery? Do you know if it is being charged by the charging system? If don't know that for sure get a volt meter and check voltage the engine is running; you should get upwards of 13.8 volts or so when you rev it.

Yes I bought a new one. It runs fine and works well but when I let it sit a few days then it goes dead. I recharge it and it will run fine and then after sitting it goes dead again. Didnt have this problem before I jumped it off in cold weather.

I wonder if it will it stay charged if you disconnect it and let it sit for a few days?

ya thats a good idea to disconnect it. could be stray current.you dont have handwarmers or anything that isnt wired to a powered wire? i dont get that either. is that possible to overload somthing by getting jumped from a bigger battery? i actually read somthing the other day on an ooolllddd craftsman battery charger,it had somthing to do with the power the battery puts out or takes in when at different temps. i saw a friggen battery at lowes for atv's and stuff,$34. you cant tell by looking, but it did look decent.

Can you explain how you "jumped it".

If this is on a new battery I would suspect there is a parasitic drain somewhere on the bike, gps?, radio memory?, winch switch?

Try this;
1) with all accessories OFF disconnect the positive cable
2) touch the positive cable to the positive terminal on the battery
3) pay close attention and look for any small sparks
4) if you see a spark something is drawing from the battery with everything off, whatever this is is the source of your drain.

If there is no drain take the battery to advance or auto-zone they can load test the battery to rule out a dead / shorted cell in the battery.

he has a clock in his pod he will always get a spark. What i am wondering is if he jumped it from a running car if he didnt blow the the voltage regulator.

Yes I jumped it from my truck... I do have a display so that stays on (the clock). I must have a draw caused by a short brought on by the jump. How about this??? If I unhook the battery should it keep running?

Yes. The battery is only there for starting and to smooth out he DC voltage. Like in a car/truck etc... the usage equipment is run off of the rectifier.

I like the take the battery to autozone idea. Wish I would have thought of that!

That'll tell you the story on the battery w/out having to jump through hoops. If it's not the battery then it's something we're on to something else.
