true 4 wheel drive

I have a 2004 artic cat 500 4x4 and while plowing michigans 14" of snow was having some problems with traction, this is due to the limited slip. i know with trucks detroit lockers will take care of this but not ok for driving on the hard roads. Can i get these for the atv? and if so how well does this work?

I don't know if they were making the VP model with the solid rear axle then which did not have diff lock but if you have an FIS model you should have diff lock which makes it true 4 WD unit

SORRY, I STAND CORRECTED. I DON'T SEE A DIFF LOCK LEVER ON THE 2004 MODELS IN THE PARTS FICHE.

The rear is a spool (aka locked). The front is an open diff. Your model must not have came with a locker for the front. I never use mine when plowing only in the deep mud or snow or stuck. When locked steer is difficult.

So are you noticing only one front wheel spinning and one not? Usually both will spin unless on wheel has no traction. (on smooth ice or off the ground)

FYI: When I need a little extra traction for plowing deep snow, I add weight to the racks. 150# on the rear.

I think you can add a front diff with a locker to your bike along with the handlebar controls. I know some people have done it with the little arctic cat 300's.

true 4 wheel drive

I have a 04 sales broshure The only machine shown with a locking front diff. for that year is the 650. I have a 03 500. I wanted a locking diff in it. I used one out of a 04 650. The gear ratio is 3.6 The 03 500 is 3.1 I had to change both ends. thay went to 3.6 in 04 on the 500. I would check and make sure that you have 3.6 gears before changing. Besides the 650 diff. you will need a front left axle.

Thanks for all the feedback,

of course i try to push way more snow then i should but i do only have one tire spinning at a time on front AND rear as well. it seems to do this only when stuck and the pressure is off off the tire, when pulling heavy loads both rear tires are working.(i also use the 4 wheeler to drag 10' x 20" ash logs out of my woods) the 4 wheel switch in 4 wheel of course.
yes i dont have a diff lock switch.

are there any after market kits or is that the only way to get a locker is to (part out a 650?)
thanks again

Both rear tires should ALWAYS spin. I'm taking a shot in the dark here, but maybe you have a broken axle? maybe the CV joint inside the boot has broken?

I agree with Terry. Something isn't right in the rear. Both wheels should spin together 100 % of the time.

Yes you would need the front locking diff, you want one of the older ones with a cable (manual) locker. 04-07 models, I think.

I actual just put diff lock on my 2003 4x4 250. It was easy but can be expensive. You can figure about $500 based on eBay prices.

Im parting my bike out right now and I currently still have everything you need to give your bike diff lock, Front Diff 300, Front Axle's 100, Diff Lock lever and cable 25.00, and the 4x4 switch 25.00 for a grand total of 450, but you could then easily slap your diff and front axles on ebay and fetch back 300+ for those. Let me know if your interested!!
