my dads 08 400 had a fuel smell ever since it was new, it leaks a little fuel out of the carb drain tube as well. Dont think it could be a sticking float since it did it since new, even though i dont know how long it could have sat before we bought it, couldnt be long though. Ill try tapping the bowl on his, with the handle end though lol

When they pulled the carbs apart at the shop,if they bumped one of the floats going back on with the bowl it will throw the float level off and cause the overflow to leak,I don't know the float level setting but i am sure the dealer can tell you. You can also pull the float valve out to see if it has trash in there or if it is is grooved and possibly needs replacing. And a little advice take one of the carb screws down to lowes or home depot and match it up with allen head screws and change all of them it makes life alot easier when pulling the bowls off....

So I got the replacement float bowl cover and installed it with no problems. I think I know what the original problem was (before I put a hole in it!). I always run with a full tank of fuel, but recently I let it run down to almost empty (I was broke). So let me tell you the story. About 6 months ago I was crashin through the woods and somehow a 3" diameter log came up after being run over by the front right tire and jammed right into my fuel cap. By the time I noticed it, it had snapped the fuel cap off, along with most of the threads that the cap screws onto. I didn't want to buy a new gas tank assembly, so when I got back to the house I put some super glue on it to try to fix the problem. You know that didn't work. So next I tried silicone, that didn't work either because silicone is dissolved by gasoline. To make a long story short, I do alot of riding in wet swampy areas. I think I had water in the bottom of my tank and when I ran it low on fuel That is what caused the float to stick. So I drained the tank and used some petroleum resistant liquid nails to "seal the deal" (still can't afford a new fuel tank). All worked out good and the bike actually runs better than before. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to spend $100 on a part because I'm always looking for ways to spend my "vast fortune". Good learning experience though. Love gettin beneath the plastic. Thanks for all the comments and help, You guys rock.
