I went out riding this week end only to have my 04 V650 give me problems. I went to start it and it acted like it was locking up while cranking with the starter. It did that 2 times, then it started. After riding 1/2 hour it started dying when I let off the gas, it was very hard starting, running on one cylinder part time. Any one else having any problems like this?

Engine braking Selenoid Removed

Guess what, your choke is stuck on,I'll bet. When your engine won't turn over on the starter it sounds to me you have a cylinder full of fuel, hydolocked.Been there, done that.
Most of us have been through the sticky choke problem,A/C has not likely heard of it though.

But my 04 has a manual choke on the handlebars. How could it be stuck on?

The cable sticks.Where the cable splits into two and goes into the metal brackets gets out of line sometimes as well, loosen the screws off a little on the carbs that hold the choke cables and work the choke back and fourth a bit and then re-tighten them.
I had your exact same problem dude, wouldn't idle worth a crap,if you jammed it WFO it would catch a little and seem like it may be okay and then back to the same old miss.Adjusting the idle or the air-fuel mixture screws did nothing, then like you said the starter wouldn't turn it over so I tore the carbs off and the intake and front cylinder were level full of gas.

Turns over a few times, then comes to a halt like there's a rope in the cylinder or something. It's a heavy clunk when it stops.

I appreciate your replies and will check out the choke cables. Sounds like you guys know what you're talking about. I hope that's all it is. Thanks again.

Is your fuel tank pressurizing? You may want to check and make sure there is no fuel in your crankcase.
