today i was riding, my bike ran out of gas... well it did the usual thing any vehicle does when it runs outa gas, the more throttle you give it, the more it bogs down..well, mine did just that, butit backfired..real loud, died..i pushed it back to the house, put gas in it, tried startin it up, got it runnin, and it would kill on me again but backfired..real real loud again..so for the third time i got it started, this time at an angle with the rearend lower than the front (since the fuel pumps at the very back of the tank) and got it runnin okay, reved it up and it smoked alittle brown..like it got trash in it? from there bein such low gas? i got it rolllin alittle bit towards the garage, rolled about 35 feet..then it died..and backfired THE SPLIT second after it died..so i put more gas in it, for the second time..and now it wont start..
checked the plug, good.
checked to see if injector was dirty..clean.
Thought it might be the famous o-ring in the fuel pump..but its delivering gas in the cylinder...im pretty sure,.
is this normal? ive been tryin to get it runnin since before sun set, i finally gave up because idk wut else to do, and i jus got the bike about a month ago..help?
still wont start. As soon as i get my hands on a new spark plug, (which may be cr8 or cr9 instead of the cr7e because thats all i have...is that fine?) if that dont do the trick..im goin to check my injector to see if its sprayin. If thats workin, then i really dont know wut else to do.. Batterys puttin out 12.3, so its good.. i also forgot to mention i pressure washed my bike with a commercial-grade pressure washer before it started actin up...
maybe somthin electrical got wet....?I dunno
maybe just coincidental...
as soon as i get this thing runnin i will..and today i tired the cr8 plug...thats a no-no...the second i hit the button it backfired louder than yesterday..scared the sh*t outa me..wuts up with all this backfirein? i mean wut the hells the deal???
It might get it running^^^^^^^. Sounds like it could be a timing issue. Check and see if your timing chain has jumped or stretched or the adjuster could be bad.
guess ill try that.. i really hope it aint a timing issue..its got dual overhead cams..eekkk and wuts an adjuster? thanks btw,
i jus hope that its an easy fix, and that no water got in the cylinder and stuck the rings to the piston..
Try disconnecting the ecu for a few and disconnect the battery. Just a suggestion. Tomorrow I'm doing my tps, 3 cv boots, and brakes all around. My quad shuts off after I rise and with the velocity Lyle thinks its the tps. Let's hope.
alright, well my batterys disconnected now because i removed my back fenders looking for a fuel filter that dont exist..i might as well blow out the fuel line while its off and maybe check the fuel pump for trash buildup..where exactly is the ecu? is that what the Vdi replaces? But i think it may be the spark plug..or clogged injector..
Id really like to know why its backfireing like it is though? it almost dosnt seem good...and when i play with the throttle its like it Trys to try to start...haha better than yesterday i guess? but today i took my plug hich looked filed, and torched it to clean it up..which i guess made about as much of a difference as not much...
Back fire is more than likely a lean condition--not getting enough fuel. The spark plug should be changed with the right one.
Do a search, you need 42 lbs pressure on the fuel line going to the throttle body. members have made there own adapters from automotive parts stores.
ecu is under the seat, ya cant miss it, it has about 15 wires in the plug.
Seeing how it acted up after a pressure wash, I'd suspect water in a connection first.
Where did you aim the water at? if you removed the seat and washed that, thats where i would start, there are a few sensors on the airbox & throttle body. Some pressure washers have enough power to pull wires out of a connection
After all connections are checked and greased (like mentioned above) start with these:
1. new spark plug-- the right one
2. fuel pressure check
3. if fuel pressure is o.k., clean fuel injector
4. fuel filter is a screen on the bottom of the fuel pump-
My guess is water in a connection or a wire open or bare
How many miles on the quad?
ECU is under the seat, has the large plug and is in a rubber holder. Towards the back of the back of the quad. Diselectrical grease every plug. I do it every time i was my bike. I believe you can check the fuel injector by removing your glove box, take the top off the air filter box, remove the foam filter and look down the intake see if its spraying.
Off to go rip my quad now... could possibly have a bad ground somewhere too...
Verify your ignition timing. I think it should be 10 degrees BTDC like all cats. It's possible that a violent backfire could of sheared the key that fold the flywheel in time to the crank.
I didn't take the seat off while I hit it with the pressure washer..,the side covers were off though. I tried to check the filter on the pump today, there were 3reasons why I couldn't...1-couldn't get fuel line off to get pump out. 2-the filters square like a window pane, and looks too large to come out the same hole the fuel pump sits in and 3-full tank of gas..blurring my view if the filter.
I hope the timings not bumped off..I don't know how to check that, fix it, and I really don't wana deal with a bent valve or messed up piston, but I did think it was a possibilty. I tried the old kingquad trick, key on and off twice to prime pump, then bump starter button 2-3 times in 2-second periods..alittle life came with that, but didn't happen again. My guess with that is lack of fuel or too much air??
And I know I said cr7e..but my dad bought me two cr6e's today while I was in school, which was originally wut was in it...
I really hope this is simple, and is fixed soon...it's killin me. I've been wantin a Cat for over 4 years now, finally got one and even the way I want it...and all it's been doin is sittin in my garage in pieces gettin fixed...:/ worse part is I'm 17 and $broke$ with little experience:/
I had one that backfired like that from not wanting to start. Cause of backfire was a pin in the ECU was burnt out. Result of backfire was a spun timing gear on the exhaust cam. The gears are pressed on the cams in these motors. There are little timing marks on the cam and gear that show where they should be aligned at.
Im begining to believe mines done the same. How can you tell if the pins are burnt? I have two thatlook like they got white **** on em. Its startin to piss me off
up date on the bike-
its pumpin 25psi for compression... so, tear down starts soon, and hopefully rebuild soon after. I'm really worried i wont find the issue that caused it to back fire, and scared it might happen again after rebuild....so i guess ima go over every wire on this bike, and hopefully throw in a copperhead ecu if i can spare the cash....
fml:angry2:
call lyle at vdi before you buy a new one. Sometimes they have refurbished ones for 100-150 less than new that re as good as new.
what were you getting for fuel pressure? I also pulled the coil wire off the the plug side and the side that goes straight to the coil and packed it with diselectrical grease and my quad runs so much better.
did you try to reset the ICS? put the jumper in to read the codes, hold the throttle wide open, turn the key on position wait 15 seconds while still holding WOT, tun the key off put hte jumper and see if she fires up....
My quad is acting up too. When it gets engine gets warm it shuts off. I plug my factory ecu in starts right up. The power difference is crazy, hoping its a tune issue. Waiting to hear from Lyle.
You don't need to tap into the line, just undo it from the top of the tank
Just slide the locking clip out and lift up the line and slide a tube attached to a pressure gauge.
I just go permission to ride the 42 acres that my neighbor has and the trails look like this. No ones been out there in 12 years.
The owner just passed and her daughter wants me to patrol out back.
