Well with 13 miles on the clock my new sled is at the dealer. I bought from a dealer 4 hours away to get one of the last 8000 RR'S left in Ontario. My local guy who i originally bought from before the sled was stolen is now working on my engine.
Yesterday I fired the sled up and it was only running on 1 cylinder. Took it to the shop to investigate and there was oil and grease all over the one side of the engine starting at the power valve. Thought it might have been a loose spark plug but those were perfectly clean. I was going to dig further into it but figured "hey it's under warranty, i shouldn't have to do this" so i parked it beside my truck. Then today when i went to load it in the truck it bogged down and then quit. Now it won't start at all.
Took it to the dealer so now I wait. Hopefully I'll hear something before the new year.
I hope this isn't an indication of the quality I should expect out of this sled. I went to Cat literally for this reason...put 3 engines in my last 2 ski-doos and didn't want to have to do it again. We'll see I guess! Hopefully it's nothing too major.
Wow not a common problem with these motors.. These have been around for a while and are proven.. Could of been something wrong right from factory if all you have is 13 miles on it..
Dealer says my safety tether wasn't on all the way. He's rode it around and now it's running perfectly.
Guess I was a little gun shy after putting 3 engines in my last 2 sleds. Just seems weird for me that one cylinder would quit and then the other with just the tether loose. On all my last skidoo sleds they wouldn't fire up at all if it was loose. The dealer also says that the grease on the one side of the engine can happen and that sometimes on a brand new sled but would stop shortly.
lol I'd rather hear it was something dumb then have a bum motor.. One of the main reason I bought the Cat 8 its one of the most reliable 8s on the market today
If you'd spent even half of what I have in the past 4 years repairing engines you'd want to be safe too. The sled lost 1 cylinder, had oil all over one side of the engine coming from a power valve, and then lost another cylinder. Call me crazy but that's a bit of a red flag after JUST coming off 3 rebuilds.
My skidoos wouldn't run period if the tether was lose. With the losing 1 cylinder first and oil all over the engine I thought I should take it for warranty work, as I'm sure 90% of others would as well.
The dealer checked a whole lot of things first because even to him what was going on was odd.
Where did the dealer say the grease and oil was coming from? I've never really heard of that and can't think of where grease and oil would be coming from without it being a problem. I own a 2014 RR,
I have to be honest I've never heard of that before. Not trying to sound like a know it all but I've been building and assembling snowmobile engines for years and never heard of having to wait for gaskets to seal up. They should seal from the very moment they are torqued.
I thought the same thing but the dealer should know what there talking about. it was in under warranty, I'd imagine they would have charged warranty work to Cat if something was the matter. It doesn't seem right but I guess it is :/
Don't worry bro I'm sure they charged lots to Cat.. Curious... did you premix your first tank of gas and how much oil if you did?? I wonder if you had a gummed up power valve to begin with and the tether cord was just a coincidence afterwards from cranking the sh-t out of it..?? maybe the pull cord handle hit it..
