Speedometer stopped, 2002 pantera 550

The speedometer and odometer stopped working during my last trip. Does this need to be replaced or is it something that is fixable? It seems the cable runs down under the clutch somewhere.
All help is greatly appreciated.

Speedo cable attaches to the "drive adapter" located on tunnel under secondary clutch. It's held on with 3 nuts. In there is a 3" long square cable that probably broke, common issue with all sleds. When it breaks it's usually a sign that the driveshaft bearing located there may be shot. That's an extensive repair as skid and track must come out. Chaincase has to be opened up too.

Wow, a driveshaft bearing? How can I tell if it is indeed shot, will it be loose? This sled only has about 1,300 miles on it.

Check that little cable first. To check bearing you must release track tension and grab driveshaft to feel for any play or roughness. Even this way is hard to really tell. Miles are one thing for wear, but so is time. Grease "dries" out and wear will be accelerated. Water contamination doesn't help either. The drive adapter can fail too but not that often.

It'not the miles it's the condition of the bearing. Original ones had a weep hole in the side plate that let moisture in and rotted out the bearing. Your sled is a 2002, it's fifteen years old. thats potentially 14 summers it could have been left to rust a bearing. And most likely thats your problem, this is always the first thing that snaps off is that little spring drive key, it almost never breaks on it's own. You can almost see it after you take the drive off the side the shaft will be out of center in the bearing. Good news is that bearing is all of $8.99 at your local Farm & Barn

Far as a manual heres the service manual and it's free from Country Cat. It's for 2005's but they are all the same from 2002 to 2005 pretty much. Your driveshaft bearing job is in the "Drivetrain & Brake" section

OK, thanks 660catman and guudasitgets. I guess I need to do a little exploratory surgery. I was hoping to just replace the speedo and be done with it. Thanks for the resources too. Although the part is inexpensive, I'm sure it would be an expensive repair at the local AC shop.

I guess we should not continue to use the sled until I know for sure about that bearing. I've already put 75 miles or so on it since the speedo broke.

Nah I wouldn't bother taking it in. If your at all mechanically inclined it's an easy job. First one I did took me most of an afternoon. I've done so may now my brother and I got it down to 45 min to an hour from the ground to ground.

Nope don't use it, you can wreck the chaincase and tunnel

Yes, before you take out the chaincase side which is way more money. Better safe than sorry
